Lots of new things buzzing about for this tomato girl. i hope you’re all well. i’ve had another year of “set it and forget it” tomatoes as i’ve been focusing on new and exciting endeavors.

What’s cool is that when i do make time to go over and check my plants, I know they’re gonna be okay cause they’ve been watered on a consistent schedule, and they really like that. The soil I got is organic and charged with nutrients and we added about 10 night crawlers to each bucket so the worms are keeping the roots aerated and fertilized with their turds. Sometimes days will have passed and when I go out to pick SO MUCH will have changed in the garden. It’s always a big WOOAHHHHH when I something new and cool. Like tonight it was my overgrown zucchini plant that just went NUTSSSSS and looks like a mondo huge wooly mammoth of a plant.

Over all the garden is doing ok without me but not great- a bunch of disease left untended to which will likely spread and take down all my plants. But I just don’t have time to deal. These buckets are DONE after this season and will certainly be recycled.

What’s going on with your garden? Give me the good, the bad, the ugly LOL.

As always,

My green zebra tomato plants have been a little
wimpy and lackluster this season.

This just may have something to do with the fact that a couple weeks ago I accidentally let the entire tray dry out. About 2/3 of the plants survived. which was surprising to me..

At first glance— i told myself “it is what it is”.. at that point I thought they were all dead and there was nothing I could do. For a brief moment, I mourned what would have been— the fresh brightness and tart sweetness of a warm, sunkissed, freshly-picked green zebra on a summer afternoon.

Alas—I watered the shriveled up, completely dead looking plants (a habit of mine i’m convinced is tied to either trauma or my unrelenting optimism and extremely hopeful nature).

And 21 of them popped back up!! Wooo! Another example of natures resilience and a reason to keep hope alive! (why can’t my houseplants be more like tomatoes?!?!?!)

Of those 21 I picked the strongest 18, potted them up and they’re currently getting their morning sunbath, but of all the plants I’ve got this season, they’re my strugglers. I have faith that they’ll catch up and we’ll end up getting a stampede of green zebra plants come early september! I’ll just keep whispering sweet nothings and words of encouragement to them every chance I get.

Have you ever tried a green zebra tomato? Or talked to one?

Here are some of the first plants I potted up. looking super strong on May 2nd 2024 (sown 3/28/24)

The next week and a half is gonna be bonkers for me so I’m not sure when I’m going to plant outside, but these babies officially live outdoors and are loving life in the sunshine .

This year is the first year that lots of my plants still have their cotyledons— (the very first leaves that appear after germination) which in past years have ALWAYS FALLEN OFF.

I am immensely proud! I was able to avoid all the seedling/starter plant issues I’d faced as when I started my seed starting journey about 5 years ago. And as a result these tomato gals are thriving!!! So exciting!!

Have you noticed any improvements in your life? Sometimes the smallest ones are the most rewarding!

Peace, love and tomatoes!

My mom’s favorite variety is Hungarian Heart- a beautiful large sweet and dense red tomato- perfect for every tomato recipe to be honest! Salads, sandwiches, sauces, you name it, this one hits the mark in flavor, complexity and the classic factor. People are used to red tomatoes, and always look for them! So I will always grow at least one variety, so this is the one!

this one is just to show new growth, and encourage you.

along the way— your plants may have some issues- leggy, yellow etc, but as long as there is new growth, the plant stands a great chance of recovering. maters are hella resilient.

There’s more than one reason Tomato Girl has her classics— A: Mouthwatering Flavors ranging from sweet and bright to deep and earthy.

B: Visually Impactful Salads with Stunning Colors and Contrast

C: Dependable bountiful strong varieties.

D: They are SUMMER.

E: everyone needs a strong classic red (hungarian heart), a sweet yellow (big rainbow), a deep flavorful minerally purpley brown for that “heirloom” flavor (cherokee purple) and a bright and exciting wildcard to confuse the tomato noobs (green zebra)

ok sooooo what are your classics? which of these is your favorite?
(hungarian heart, big rainbow, cherokee purple, green zebra)

In years past, i’ve wanted to pull my hair out. Way too many plants, starting too early, running in and out of my house hardening them off a little at a time. Overwatering some & underwatering others. Freaking out when my plants turned purple or yellow or started looking a little droopy.

This year I did things a little differently. I went with a “buy nothing” no-stress mentality. It definitely helps that along the way I’ve accumulated years of knowledge and experience, made friends who have offered LOTS of advice and I’ve slowwwwwwed down.

So here’s how it’s going so far:

I started my seeds in batches. (mostly march 28th) Meaning I just poured all the seeds from one variety into its own small pot. (a HUGE SPACE SAVER for the first couple weeks)

Then around April 15, I potted them up and separated all the plants- giving each one its own pot. The roots need space. They’re currently in various stages of growth- some almost ready for the ground.

Instead of thousands of plants I grew about 250 this year. I’m planning to keep around 50 of them myself 😅

I used nursery pots i had left from years past, trays too. Lights and shelves bought prior. Last year’s extra potting mix (organic veggie herb promix) I only bought one pack of seeds. The rest were from my stash. (ok obviously i’m a collector—-wait till I start showing you guys around my house as I renovate)

I did buy bone meal this year. Bone meal fertilizer ups the phosphorus content. My plants were looking a little purple and the likely reasons were either: overwatering, lack of phosphorous or wrong light. So I addressed all 3– less water, bone meal and sunlight. I I added epsom salt to help prevent yellowing.. I read that if your plants go yellow you treat them with epsom so I decided to start with it to get ahead of the yellowing.

And honestly my plants are better than ever!🍅✨

Anyone else dreaming about that first harvest? What item from your garden are you most excited to slice/bite into? This year - you all know by now- I am really excited to try the purple tomato— why does my mind keep telling me it’s going to be sweet??? Part of me is hoping it tastes like a big juicy plum… but then… why not just eat a plum???? hmm..

Besides the purp, i’m really excited for another year of the Tomato Girl Standard Classics. Big Rainbow, Green Zebra, Cherokee Purple, Hungarian Heart. They’re just that good and hit all the marks (and color spectrum) of delicious summer tomatoes.

Now I know soooooo many of you are all about the sungolds and I get it, but i’m just not as into the cherries. I grow them anyway to appease the masses.

Ok one final question… how many plants are you guys growing in your garden?? Asking the tomato crazies and the regular backyard gardeners.

I was thinking to do 48-50… which doesn’t seem excessive but maybe i am delusional? lol
happy monday guys.

As you probably see i’m trying to get back into posting regularly again. If you’re into it, please give me feedback or just an emoji to validate me lol.

as always:
Peace, love & tomatoes

What stage of growth are your plants at?These are a few weeks in and due to be potted up into larger nursery pots soon… pretty much now.. but I’m busy today so they have to wait.

Each year, I’ve pushed back my seed start date further and further and started later And later and it has only made things easier on me. Anyone else?

This year may have been an all time latest record.

‼️‼️MARCH 28th‼️‼️

I live in Easton, PA, USA in zone 7a (as of this year’s change) and I usually aim to get the plants in around Mother’s Day. Well, that never happens because I’m always busy on Mother’s Day and the time leading up to it… so knowing that, I planned for later month of May and right now, my plants are right on schedule. Generally you aim to start seeds about 8 weeks before you’re ready to put the plants in the ground (UNLESS you are willing to pot up to larger gallon sized containers and have the space to accommodate large plants indoors at night while waiting for the last frost to pass)

So this year, since I started later, I don’t have a monstrous forest of way-too-tall plants taking up space in my house, and I’m not stressing about them at all. It feels good to be easy going about the plants rather than stressed and panicked.

I’ve got 12 varieties this year and am getting very excited about this years bounty to come! Who else can’t stop thinking about summer harvests now that the weather is getting warmer???

happy earth day with love from your personal tomato girl. 🍅✨
