We are excited to be considered for the prestigious ULI Philadelphia 2023 Award for Excellence for the LANTA Allentown Transportation Center! We invite you to join us on June 15, 2023, at National Museum of American Jewish History for the announcement of this year’s project winners. Read more about our project’s finalist showcase: https://philadelphia.uli.org/lanta-allentown-transportation-center-plaza/

The 1.64-acre plaza was Omnes’ first built project, and as lead designer we’re especially proud that it’s being considered by the ULI jury. The plaza’s standout feature is its origami-inspired bus shelter pavilion, designed by Omnes and expertly engineered by Bernardon and DCI+MacIntosh Engineers. It features an undulating green roof that shelters 3,000 passengers daily while capturing stormwater to offset the necessary impermeable pavement.

"Laura Stedenfeld is the founder of Omnes, a women-led design firm established in 2019 and based in the Lehigh Valley. Uniquely situated in the Simon Silk Mill in Easton, PA, Omnes creates beautiful designs that are ecologically-centered and born out of the communities that use them.

The studio's founding ideology of Omnes, meaning 'all, everybody, together' in Latin, rings true to Stedenfeld's work, which pushes past the boundaries between urban and rural to bring thoughtfully crafted designs to a diversity of communities across the country."

We were delighted to see last week’s story from the The Morning Call about the preservation of the President Pumping Engine site at the historic Ueberroth Zinc Mine. Omnes worked alongside Spillman Farmer Architects on the restoration-based landscape design located in Friedensville, Upper Saucon Township. Zinc mining and smelting took place on the site during the second part of the nineteenth century, coinciding with the birth of the U.S. zinc industry. The pump itself was installed in 1872 to extract 17,000 gallons per minute from five mining sites. The pump pulled water from a 300-foot depth, and was once known for being the largest single cylinder rotative steam engine in the world, although only ruins remain today.

The design engages visitors in a museum-like experience, for which the main exhibit is the central industrial ruin of the President Pumping Engine. The accessible space highlights the unique cultural and ecological histories of the site through curated pathways and views of the decommissioned mine pit beyond. Pathways of crushed recycled porcelain form a circular trail that guides visitors in and around the pumping engine building. In the picnic area, poetic stone inlays allude to the historic locations of the boilers that were integral to keeping the pump in operation. This space will also feature the lone remaining original steam boiler (of 22), which was recently recovered by Lehigh University and Manhattan Building Company from the basement of the Buehler furniture factory in Allentown, where it spent the past 122 years as a water tank.
