This is hilarious, but definitely happens, and can be used as a cautionary tale.

This has happened to us on more occasions than we’d like to remember. Usually it is a non-PA One Call item (private drain pipes, electric line to a backyard, water line to a backyard, often run by pervious homeowners, and unknown to current owners), but one time, in Portage around 2006, One Call missed the mark by a mile.

They marked the main electric for the entire development 3’ outside of our excavation zone. In reality, it was 6” inside the excavation area. I took a minute to check my pants when I “located” it, then called Penelec to inspect it, then my wife, then it was back to work.

I have used this experience to teach anyone who operates for us that patience is key to a successful excavation. That day taught me many lessons, but that was the most impactful.

811/One Call doesn’t always get it right, but they are usually right on the money, but if you don’t call, and you cause damage, your insurance won’t cover the damage, you’ll be liable, and have committed a crime, even if on your own property.

Call before you dig!
