It’s looking more and more likely that this one hits and hits hard. Moving our estimate up from 6-8” this weekend to 18-20”, and that will be on top of the 5-8” expected by tomorrow morning. It should be light snow though as cold as it is supposed to be. Buckle up, this could get interesting!

Out of my career of forecasting the weather, this is the strongest signal I have seen for a far-widespread major winter storm across much of the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast. Over the last 24 hours, better sampling of the storm "energy" in the Pacific Ocean has been digested into model guidance, and the northern/amplified scenarios are becoming more and more likely with each model cycle. Winter storm impacts will begin to move into the region Saturday night, linger through all day Sunday, and begin to move out by Monday afternoon. A strong Arctic airmass to our north will allow temperatures during the midst of the storm to be in the single digits to teens, so road treatments will be ineffective.
This will be quite a major storm from a public/humanitarian perspective, and I do not like to use this kind of strong phrase often, if at all. A crippling ice storm across the southern and southeastern US could significantly damage the infrastructure. Secondary and side roads may become snowed in across Pennsylvania for a few days. We also have colder air filtering in behind the storm, so if you are suspectivle for power outages it wouldn't be a bad idea to make backup plans!
Stay tuned for updates!
