What changed? Not the fixture — just the approach!

By removing every other glass panel and replacing them with wood pieces cut from scrap, a homeowner transformed the look of an existing brass-and-glass fixture using materials that might otherwise have gone unused. The result feels completely different while keeping the existing fixture in service.

We love projects like this because they show how creativity, reuse, and a few simple modifications can make a piece better fit your space without sending anything to the landfill.

We are excited to partner with Art Enables, the Washington, DC, nonprofit art studio and gallery dedicated to amplifying the careers of artists with disabilities. Now at our reuse warehouse: a limited-time pop-up featuring artwork made with salvaged materials. The collection includes furniture, shelving, suitcases, and more — each piece uniquely transformed by local artists.

Submissions are now open for the Circular Showcase!

We’re looking for artists, makers, builders, designers, and creative reuse enthusiasts who transform salvaged materials into something new. Furniture, lighting, sculpture, functional objects, mixed media, and more — if you create with reuse in mind, we’d love to see your work and ideas.

Selected pieces will be featured in the Circular Showcase Celebration at Community Forklift on October 15, with completed projects due to the reuse warehouse by October 1.

This desk had been through a lot before arriving at Community Forklift, but one family saw its potential and brought it home for a collaborative project. Now it’s back in use, full of personality, and ready for many more years of life in a child’s bedroom.

One of the best parts of reuse is the stories that continue after an item leaves our warehouse. We love seeing salvaged materials find a new home and become part of new memories. Thanks to this family for sharing their project with us!
