I know our name says “painting”, but we do a bit more than that. This deck was in need of some repairs, which we were able to handle as part of our prep work getting the deck ready for some fresh stain.
The black tape we lay across the joists and stringers, originally intended for construction of composite decks, helps to keep moisture from collecting under the deck boards and treads, where the material is particularly vulnerable. Low air flow, lack of light, and holes made by fasteners is a recipe for rot, and this is the most common point of failure for most wood framed decks.
We also use nails versus screws, which also helps to prolong the life of a wood deck. Yes, nails will back out over time as the wood swells and shrinks with the seasons. Screws won’t move, but the wood will still swell and shrink, causing the screw heads to cut deeper holes where water can begin to collect. Holes full of water = conditions for rot.
Big thanks to Ian, my client-turned-apprentice, for helping get this one knocked out while Jelani is off working on a documentary project.
We’ll be ready to stain tomorrow if the weather holds up for us. Stay tuned for the final results!!
