🌳 What's Going On With This Tree Trunk?

If you've noticed black bark on the lower trunks of ornamental trees like this one, don't panic—it isn't always a disease.

In these photos, this appears to be a combination of:
✅ Sooty mold or algae buildup
✅ Lichen growth (the gray-green patches)
✅ Moisture retention from dense multi-stem growth
✅ Possible sunscald or old bark damage that has darkened over time

The good news? Lichens themselves do not harm trees. They're often a sign that the tree is growing slowly or that the area stays damp and shaded.

What should you do?

✔ Remove dead, crossing, or crowded branches to improve airflow.
✔ Keep the base free of weeds and debris.
✔ Monitor for cracking, peeling bark, or areas that feel soft.
✔ Avoid piling rock or mulch directly against the trunk flare.
✔ Water during drought periods, but don't keep the root zone constantly wet.

Pro Tip:

When ornamental trees become overcrowded with multiple stems, thinning a few interior trunks can improve air circulation and reduce moisture-related issues while highlighting the tree's natural structure.

🌿 REVEAL TIME! 🌿

The mystery plant was...

💜 SALVIA 💜

This hardworking perennial is one of our favorites for adding long-lasting color to the landscape!

Why we love it:
☀️ Loves full sun
🦋 Attracts butterflies, bees, and other pollinators
🌸 Blooms for weeks and often reblooms with a quick trim
💪 Drought tolerant once established
🌱 Comes back year after year

Salvia is a great choice for landscape beds, borders, and anywhere you want reliable color without a lot of maintenance.

And unlike some plants that need constant attention, salvia is pretty content doing its own thing. Kind of like that one employee who just shows up, works hard, and never complains. 😂

🌸 Don’t Forget About Your Ornamental Trees! 🌸

Ornamental trees may be smaller than shade trees, but proper trimming is just as important for their health and beauty.

Regular pruning helps:
✔️ Maintain their natural shape
✔️ Encourage fuller blooms and healthy growth
✔️ Remove dead or crossing branches
✔️ Improve airflow to help reduce disease
✔️ Prevent low branches from becoming a nuisance near sidewalks or driveways

Trees like crabapples, magnolias, redbuds, Japanese maples, and flowering cherries all benefit from proper care at the right time of year.

⚠️ Over-trimming or trimming at the wrong time can reduce flowering and stress the tree — which is why proper pruning matters!

A little maintenance now keeps ornamental trees looking beautiful season after season. 🌿
