My newest garden! A soft landings garden, the idea is that many insects drop from the trees into the foliage and dead leaves as part of their lifecycle. It’s also beautiful. And protects the root zone from mowing and compaction. Mine is imperfect - it’s only a small area instead of the whole root zone, and the driveway is not ideal for the tree. Better than nothing though! And it’s been fun to watch it fill in.

summer blooming plants are in a race to see who blooms next

It’s so exciting,

I’m out there checking waaay too often and have even been overheard telling friends “ in just a week it’s going to be AMAZING “ and they humor me because my friends are nice even the ones who don’t really get it about the garden-obsession

Experienced plant people, which of these do you think it will be??

Let’s think about understory

Understory : woody shrubs and trees that are shorter than the tallest canopy trees, but taller than the perennials on the ground.

Now imagine your typical suburban lot:

A few trees plonked in when the house was built . Smaller bushes and plants around the foundation.
Something is missing.

Understory! trees whose mature height is going to be short, like serviceberry, redbud, crabapple, dogwood. Woody shrubs like elderberry & viburnum.

These provide shelter and nesting sites for birds, they build the soil, stop erosion, and also are just some of the most gorgeous (in my opinion) additions to your landscape. Visually softening the sharp lines of tall trees and the built environment.

Also present in the understory are young oaks, hickory, walnut: the next generation of big trees waiting in the wings. valuable!

You don’t have to have a full on thicket in your yard (although you can!) but look for ways to add understory, because it’s just so darn important and beautiful.

You can buy trees. You can also dump a bucket of acorns in a spot you’d like oaks, ask friends with mature gardens for saplings (I’ve been gifted dogwood and redbuds)

Native shrubs help because a lot of the shrub layer has been overtaken by buckthorn, winged euonymus, and honeysuckle. I’m adding back in blackberry, elderberry, spice bush.

Now is a great time to do a quick audit: do you see only mature trees + lawn? YIKES you’re missing out. But it’s never too late. Get planting, friends!

Geranium maculatum appreciation post! I love this plant. Look at those flowers!!! Gorgeous. At a time when not too much else is in bloom.

(Note: entirely different from your annual garden geraniums, which are actually pelargonium & native to South Africa)

My geraniums are bright purplish pink, in bloom now, and don’t mind a bit of sun or full shade.

I found a few growing wild in my forest among an ocean of goutw**d, so I thought they’d thrive here and added 10 more.

This spring I think I finally am seeing babies (second photo) from the seeds of my plants, which is amazing! I’d rather move seedlings around than have to keep purchasing plants.

The other thing I like about this plant is that after it finishes blooming the foliage stays attractive all summer.

Do you have a shady spot that could use a pop of color? Consider this geranium.

Why do oak trees leaf out so late compared to other trees?

Being surrounded by oaks this is something I’ve noticed the last few years.

An article I read said that it might be protective against late frost. oaks are ‘ring porous’ their water-carrying vessels wide and arranged in a ring rather than narrow and diffuse.

Watching the various trees get their spring leaves feels like a symphony in slow motion, or like a tapestry that’s speedily re-sewn every spring. Glorious

If you need a new lawn beauty standard, my mom and my 10 yr old went for a walk and ratted everyone’s lawn on a scale of 1-10 jars of dandelion jelly.

Geum ‘totally tangerine’ is looking lovely today! This is a favorite but it usually gets munched before it gets a chance to bloom. Fun to see it this year.

I’m hoping these bluebells spread down the hill and replace the bishop’s w**d I’ve removed. Bluebells spread by seeds but also by rhizomes - under the ground.

Since I see these babies through my kitchen window, it’s a great joy.

More tulip joy!
