In a historic renovation it’s so important to find electricians and plumbers who are willing to work with you. In the past four years we have had to solve so many problems and come up with creative solutions alongside our amazing electrician. I don’t think we could’ve done this without having someone who has patience and is highly skilled. We did not have the right plumber and we regret a lot of decisions that were made. A historic home is not your run-of-the-mill job and it requires a lot of creativity and the right person for the job.

Piecing together the history of our 1800 farmstead. The paper (a purchase agreement?) was found stuck behind a shelf in the closet. Interesting to see how people did business back then.

Between all the renovations we still make time to make our maple syrup for the year. It’s a lot of work, but it’s so worth it.

Does anyone know why houses around the Seacoast Maine (and maybe elsewhere?) have cedar shakes on just one or maybe two sides of the house? Is there a rhyme or reason to what side they are on and do they serve a purpose? The cedar shakes in the original house from 1800 were placed on the west and east sides of the house. We see a lot of houses in the same style.

Anyone familiar with beehive ovens? Swipe to see the inside. We know the top part was used for cooking, but the bottom is a very long narrow box. It’s bigger than it appears in the photo. What is the bottom box for?

Installing the vanity using a reclaimed copper faucet with copper pipes from the house’s original plumbing. We’re piecing together an old sewing machine table for the base, a spalted maple top from a tree Jason cut down and sawmilled into planks, and a soapstone sink we found on marketplace in someone’s basement. Lots of strategy here to get his to all work!

We found newspapers from 1881 used as insulation in the stairway. We happened to find this interesting scrap… February 31!? This helps us to date the addition that was made that includes the kitchen, pantry, parlor room, bathroom and porch. You can even see the old roofline with slate shingles in the kitchen from where they added onto the original house!

! Completing a room feels so good. In this process there are so many details before you can call a room “finished” and the final stretch is the hardest. So many times I want to jump into another “new” and more exciting project instead of tending to the tiny annoying details of the one we’re currently working on that seems like it’s never going to end. Going back to the before photos gives us some motivation because this has been one long and hard ass journey. One that has tested our whole family, challenged our abilities to work together and focus, and one that I’ve wanted to give up on many times. The biggest lesson lately has been stay positive and FOCUS on one project at a time until it’s FULLY complete and then acknowledge our hard work, which acts as fuel to keep going.

We’ve been holding off on putting up this soffit box because we just couldn’t think of a solution that was halfway decent and blended with the house. There’s a chimney, existing beams, and a mess of wires to deal with.
We finally decided on cutting an aged wood slab to make a fake beam and then finishing the bottom of the box with drywall.
There will be a light hanging down from this box over the bar/island.
