My dear friend and one of the most well-spoken people I’ve ever met has released his second book today, Theological Musings Vol.1. If you’d like to read how scripture relates to environmental, political and social issues today, this is a must read! It would be quite eye opening for some folks. As a non-Christian, I found it Informative but not gushing with Christian sentiment like other books. In the book, Dillon also shares personal stories of the trauma he’s endured over the decades.

Dillon, you’re one of my heroes. Cheers to you, mate 🍻

I’d like to gain greater knowledge of the insects and birds that benefit from native plants…I think this is a swamp milkweed leaf beetle (Labidomera) on a common milkweed.

This “Earth Day/Week” we are contemplating on the idea of Earth as both organism and ecosystem that we are not separate from, that we evolved with. We aspire to live in reciprocity with Earth - surprisingly difficult in 2023 America!

We are Earth; why should we take from ourselves and not also tend and reciprocate?

One of my favorites, rudbeckia laciniata, is really popping! It’s an especially tasty green, an important edible plant of the Cherokee people, and likely other indigenous tribes.

Rudbeckia is great sautéed in bacon fat 🤤

My partner and I had the privilege and pleasure of visiting east Texas for a very brief trip. We didn’t get to Ladybird Johnson Wildflower Center but we did get to see the native flora surrounding a 20 year old gorge created by the great flood of 2002. Growing up in temperate forests, it has taken many years to appreciate scrubland and desert ecosystems. But Nature and native plants abound here! Plants which bear a vague familiarity or have a northern cousin. Plants I’ve heard of only in books (yaupon holly!). Plants with confusing common names which give way to questions about their taxonomical family and indigenous medicinal uses. So much yet to learn about these southern species but so little time as the growing/market season begins! Photos of Dakota mock vervain (Glandularia bipinnatifida), Allium drummondii, Texas persimmon, Senna roemeriana, and Diaperia prolifera.
