Calling all butterfly lovers! 🦋🌿 We have Narrowleaf Milkweed in stock at Big Oak Nursery and if you’ve been hoping to make your garden a little more welcoming to monarch butterflies, this is a great place to start.

Milkweed is especially important because it’s the host plant monarch caterpillars depend on. Adult monarchs lay their eggs on milkweed, and once those tiny caterpillars hatch, the leaves become their food source as they grow. Pretty amazing, right?

Narrowleaf Milkweed is a California native that loves sunshine, handles our warm summers well once established, and produces clusters of delicate flowers that also provide nectar for butterflies and other pollinators. Plant it in a sunny garden bed, pollinator garden, or naturalized area with well-draining soil, give it regular water while it gets established, and then let nature do its thing.

Portulaca ‘Porto Grande Citrus Crush’ is a warm-weather favorite with bold, striped blooms in shades of red, orange, yellow, and creamy white. Its succulent-like foliage helps it handle heat and dry conditions beautifully, making it a great choice for those sunny spots that can be a little tougher on other flowers.

Bright, eye-catching blooms with a low-growing habit have a high heat tolerance, and a long flowering season. It is perfect for containers, hanging baskets, borders, rock gardens, and sunny spots where you want a colorful spiller or groundcover. Give it full sun and well-draining soil. Portulaca prefers to dry out a bit between waterings, so avoid keeping the soil constantly wet. Plenty of sunshine will help encourage the best blooming.
