We get calls every year from customers asking for Elaeagnus—also known as Silverthorn or Thorny Olive. You’ve probably seen it everywhere… lining subdivisions, covering embankments, filling in landscapes like it’s the perfect solution.

And at first glance, it does seem like it checks all the boxes—tough, full, evergreen… exactly what most people think they want.

But this is one of those plants that looks good on the surface—and causes a lot more trouble than people expect.
