In my years as an architect working on remodeling projects in old homes in the Bay Area, the one thing I know for sure is that you never know what you may find behind the sheet rock and plaster when you start demolition. This post, linked above, is about my most recent encounter with construction weirdness.

This was unexpected. On one of the projects I am working on in San Francisco, the curb has these "S" stamped every 25 feet.

It didn't take me long to figure out that they mark the approximate locations of the sanitary sewer laterals running from each house out to the main in the street.

I don't know why this neighborhood has them and others don't, but I think it's pretty cool!

Have you seen similar markings around your city?

This was a nice little project for great clients. A quick bathroom refresh.

The fiberglass shower enclosure was tacky and pretty grotty, not to mention the poorly installed Pergo flooring.

We didn't move any plumbing, we just pulled out the floor, and base boards, the shower enclosure, and shower pan.

We put in new porcelain tile flooring in 18x36 size outside the shower and 2x2 in the shower. We used enormous 24x48 porcelain wall tiles to provide some drama and reduce the number of grout joints.

We also replaced the showerhead and controls, and installed grab bars.

We opted not to install a glass enclosure, because it would have made the shower harder to clean. We installed a simple shower curtain rod. That goes in next.

We only used products that were in stock, and the entire project happened in 9 working days!

At the end of 2021, I set myself the challenge of posting 3 random photos from my phone each week for the last 5 weeks of the year. I also made a video featuring each of those videos. This video is all 15 random photo videos edited together with only one intro and one exit. It's about 6-1/2 minutes of random photographic fun. It is an interesting reflection of my personality, too.

What do you think? What's on YOUR phone?

Yes. I admit it. I am one of THOSE people: I take pictures of my meals and beverages. But not all of them. And only if it was memorable for some reason.

Like this picture of a Manhattan cocktail I mixed recently. Love the color and it was super tasty.
