✨ Plant of the Month ~ July ✨
Peritoma arborea, also known by its common name as, Bladderpod.
It is native to California (primarily southern) and Baja California where it grows in a variety of habitats from coastal bluffs to desert arroyos. It is a densely branching, evergreen shrub that produces abundant, bright, sunny yellow, flower clusters year round. This plant is a favorite amongst bees, butterflies and hummingbirds.
Bladderpod is quite an easy California native to grow in landscape applications. It tolerates weekly summer water but can also get by with only natural rainfall. They are easy to grow from seeds, usually growing up to 3 feet tall in their first year. They readily self seed, and once you have a few mature plants in your garden, expect new seedlings to pop up each winter. This tough plant even grows well on south-facing slopes, in alkaline soils and salty conditions.
Family: Cleomaceae
Genus: Peritoma
Species: arborea
Plant Type: Shrub
Height: 2-6 feet
Width: 3-5 feet
Flowering Time: Spring, Summer, Fall
Sun: Full Sun
Water: 1x/month once established

Salvia apiana is this months plant of the month from 🪴

White sage, sacred sage, or bee sage is a cornerstone species of the coastal sage scrub habitat of Southern and Baja California. This stunning shrub is fragrant with silver-white leaves, and clusters of white flowers with lavender streaks. Young leaves start off green and turn white as they get older. It can grow anywhere from 3 to 5 feet in height and spreads to about 6 feet in width. The flowers and leaves are important to Indigenous tribes in various ceremonies. The flowers are arranged on long, pole-like stems and provide a unique look. It is also an important food source for bees, butterflies, birds, and other wildlife. Larger bees, notably carpenter bees, are the predominant pollinators of white sage.

White sage is deeply rooted in the culture of Indigenous communities of Southern California and Northern Baja, the only region where this sage naturally occurs in the world.

Wild white sage populations are currently under intense threat by development, smudge stick poaching, climate change, drought, and wildfire.
