BORROWED FROM ANOTHER SMALL BUSINESS OWNER..
To local business owners!
Reading some comments today about contractors and “write-offs” honestly reminded me how misunderstood small business ownership really is.
A tax write-off does NOT mean something is free. It means a business can deduct legitimate operating expenses from taxable income. The money still has to physically leave the business account first.
Most small business owners are not out here getting rich off “gas money” or “wear and tear.” They are trying to survive while juggling:
• fuel costs
• insurance
• payroll taxes
• workers comp
• equipment repairs
• office expenses
• bookkeeping/accounting
• vehicle replacements
• licensing
• advertising
• unpaid estimates
• slow seasons
• credit card processing fees
• self-employment taxes
• and sometimes customers who never even hire them after hours of work preparing quotes
People see a quote and think it’s just “labor.” In reality, the price reflects what it takes to keep a legitimate business operating legally and sustainably.
I think more business owners need to start speaking honestly about the realities behind running a business, because from the outside many people only see the final number — not the sacrifices, risks, stress, and overhead behind it.
To all the small business owners out there trying to do things the right way: keep going. A lot of us understand exactly how hard it really is.
