Be on the lookout for fire blight if you have ornamental trees in your yard - such as crabapples, hawthorns, or serviceberries - that belong to the rose and apple family. Fire blight is a potentially fatal bacterial disease that starts at the ends of twigs and branches and works its way inward – making leaves and individual branches look scorched or burned with a characteristic downward curl. This disease is difficult to control, and without treatment it can overtake and kill a tree quickly. It is also very contagious to other related trees. There is no cure for fire blight, but if caught early, the disease can be managed with careful pruning, antibiotic treatments, and supportive plant health care.
