I noticed that many people have been visiting my page. I’m thinking that I probably should post more tips and decorating hacks. Let me know what interests you or what things are a challenge for you in your house or office. I know that some of the trendy things that they are showing in the magazines and decorating sites such as all white just don’t work with a real family with kids and pets. Also too much white doesn’t cozy up the family with a lot of snow blowing around outside!

Well it's been a terrific winter in Florida this year. It's soon going to be time to return home. Looking forward to getting back to Erie. In October we moved back after living downstate in St Marys for a few years. It was a whirlwind getting settled in our new Erie home in time to leave for Florida in November.
There is always a few projects to work on in Florida and in Erie over the winter thanks to technology making communication from afar so easy! Interiors has been restructured to fit our new semi-retired lifestyle but still functions the same. Interior Design is a lifestyle, not a job. It's a passion that will never fully retire! See you in the spring!

I find this the problem when I arrive at my appointments in probably over 50% of the time. For some reason, people often cannot part with existing things even though they know they don’t work in the room. We all have a tendency to adapt to a bad furniture arrangement. Because of that, after a few years, you don’t even notice it anymore. The bad furniture arrangement escalates into more decorating mistakes because then the artwork, lighting, and accessories also get all jumbled up. It ends up nothing is balanced and the whole relationship between the furniture and the things hanging on the wall is non existent. It creates a room that doesn’t make any sense. Every thing is just all over the place and just full of stuff.

I watch some of the HGTV shows and they take everything out of the room. In real life, that is a huge inconvenience. For a family with a few kids and pets, it would take days to get it back together! I find a more gentle approach works just fine. Try this and see if you can get your room on the right track;
• The first step is to remove any magazines, books and papers from ALL surfaces, even shelves.
• Clear all the book shelves and the mantle of all small accessories. Get rid of any old worn out floral arrangements and greenery.
• Throw away any old pillows, throw blankets and broken lamps. Take a good look at all your chairs. Be sure they are not worn or broken. If you have more than fits (even if you use them) admit that a new plan of action is necessary.

This is enough to get you started. You will probably then discover that maybe your room could use a new furniture arrangement or the artwork is not hung in the best places. You will begin to see areas of concern and now can address them as needed. Another large element in a room is the window treatments because they cover such a large area. If they are bad, even a nice room doesn’t look its best.

Ten Decorating Mistakes details

Now that we have outlined the top ten most common decorating mistakes we thought we would take each one and elaborate on points of concern and how to avoid them. We will also give tips on how to correct them if you find you have made them in your house.

#10 -- Not using scale correctly We mentioned how hard it is to judge the size of furniture when you see it in the stores. If you have ever purchased a few pieces and discovered you now have a very crowded room, you are not alone. With a little planning before your shopping day, you can avoid this problem. Let’s use family rooms as an example. Square rooms are harder to furnish than rectangle rooms. For square rooms to have TV veiwing and an efficient traffic pattern, the furniture needs to float toward the middle of the room instead of anchoring it all on the walls. This requires planning the electrical outlets. If your room is a rectangle, there are points to consider as well. If the room is long and narrow, you may want to consider creating two areas, one for TV viewing and putting a game table at the other end. After the basic use of the space is determined and the main furniture pieces are planned, you need to closely consider what other tables, chest and chairs are needed to make the room work the way you want it to. These smaller pieces can either complete the look or totally throw the whole room out of balance by not choosing the proper size and shapes. It isn’t a bad idea to cut out these shapes from brown wrapping paper and actually moving them around so you can study the placement and how they will fit together. Professionals like us at Interiors of Erie can determine placement easily by instinct and also by using our computer tools to prepare a scaled floor plan. If you find you are having trouble with the planning, be sure to call someone in for help. It is less expensive than having a piece of unusable furniture sitting around after a bad purchase!

Whether we are talking about pattern in wallpaper, draperies or even the fabric on your sofa, you need to make sure the scale of the pattern matches the scale of your room. A large room full of itsy-bitsy patterns will look hectic. Also, you can use the same kind of prints in the same area, such as flowers, plaids, stripes, or geometric prints, as long as the scale is different for each one. even. If your room needs a large scale in the patterns, it probably also needs some large lamps, artwork, and accessories. Keep scale in mind while decorating and you won’t go wrong!

Next week we will go over using the wrong material. In the meantime, if you have any questions about the top ten decorating mistakes, send us an email at [email protected], or call at 814-833-8110, and we will include your questions!

I’m sure you’ve all been waiting for our top 5 decorating mistakes. How many of you were guilty of some of the mistakes included in our last post? Our top five are the most common mistakes we see from day to day and identifying the problem is the first step to fixing it!

5. Bad Lighting – Did you know that lighting is one of the most important aspects of every design? Each room should have different types of lighting based on the needs of the room. Task lighting is important in offices at your desk, bathrooms around the mirror, and kitchens under cabinets or over islands. Better task lighting also helps reduce accidents in the kitchen and headaches. Every room should have strong overhead lights for general use, and ambient lighting to use when you want your rooms to feel cozy.

4. Wrong furniture arrangement – Do you have a hard time getting around all the furniture in your home? Does your room seem uninviting, or seem not to make sense? You may be the victim of a bad layout. It’s very easy to fall into the habit of placing furniture without planning. Often, you just sort of put things places by habit. The easiest and fastest way to change the position of your large sofas, chairs and chests is to buy furniture movers. They are flat, round pieces of plastic that fit perfectly under furniture to help slide furniture across carpet and there are some for wood flooring. Try layouts that “float” all of your furniture in the middle of the room, then try pushing everything out to the walls. Experiment with different groupings.

3. Window treatments that don’t fit – All window treatments are tricky but there are some good rules when purchasing them on your own. First off, if you are just buying blinds and you are mounting them inside your trim, be sure you have enough room inside there so the brackets can be installed. Ask if you can take a bracket home and check for fit. Second, the size of your window is not the size of your draperies. Measure from one side to the other side of the window frame if you have one, then add at least 3 inches out on the wall on each side and 3 inches above; that is your drapery size. Rod pocket and tab curtains are flat but are supposed to have fullness. That is you want them gathered on the rod, to make them not lay flat. Generally for simple draperies you should have 2 times fullness, for custom draperies 2 ½ times and for sheers 3 times.

2. Choosing the wrong paint color – Generally, people have the right idea when choosing paint colors, but they are just a little off. It’s common to choose the right color, but the wrong intensity or hue, usually much too bright. You can really paint any room almost any color as long as you choose the right hue. A neutral version of every color is usually the best for any wall. In other words, a browner or greyer version of red, green, or purple is easier on the eye than the bright clear version. White is actually an accent color, picking an off- white or version of tan or beige will create a backdrop for any fabric choice. If you like white, use it in your accessories or bedding, or have white trim. Whites work on a wall only if you are careful. Many magazines and design articles pick favorites that work well.
1. Not calling someone when you need help. This rule really does apply to everything in your house, or your car, your love life. If you don’t know the answer, ask someone! If you don’t know what color to paint, call someone who does. If you have never laid out a kitchen, don’t try to do it alone. People in stores and interior designers are paid to help you choose the right product, the right color, and the right application.. Look online at every product you are purchasing for your redesign if you don’t know that much about it. I know it seems like the easiest rule on our list, but it the one most often broken. Remember, it costs just as much to do a project wrong as it does to do it right!

Part 1 of 2: Top Ten Decorating Mistakes

I’m sure that everyone is guilty of few of our top ten decorating mistakes. They are all easy to make and most of the time, we don’t even realize that we are making the mistake until the room is all finished, if at all. If an area of your house just bothers you for some reason, and you aren’t sure why, take a look at our top ten. You may have broken one of the rules!

10. Not using scale correctly – Scale is one of the most important factors in any good design. We often find that people go into a furniture store blindly and pick furniture for their home without measuring how the piece will fit in their room. In a furniture store, that sofa looks like it is going to fit perfectly, but when you get it home, your room is much too small to fit it. Why is that? Because the furniture stores usually don’t have any walls and they have very high ceilings. It makes the furniture seem like a more manageable size when in reality, they are monsters! Always take measurements or your existing furniture and/or the size of the room before you head into the store.

9. Using the wrong material – This is one of the most common, and most costly mistakes any amateur designer can make. All materials have certain ratings to let you know what is stable enough for everyday use. Think of how many times you walk across you kitchen floor in one day, one week. How many times are things spilled, and how often do you clean with harsh cleaners? These are all considerations for any material you are putting in your home. Think carefully before choosing something based just on the way it looks.

8. Clutter – This goes hand in hand with number 7 on our list, over decorating, it is such a common mistake we thought we should give it a number on the count down. Nine times out of ten, when your room isn’t working, it’s because there is too much stuff. Think about every accessory and piece of furniture in your room. Do you use or enjoy it? Does it function the way you need it to? If the answer to any of these is no, get rid of it.

7. Over or Under Decorating – Over decorating is a lot like clutter, but instead of random pieces that have just collected in your room, things are purposely put there that match the overall design of the room. There is an old saying we like to follow, “Less is more”. Do you really need 17 pillows on your sofa? Do you need a lamp on every table? Under decorating is just as dangerous. This is when the “Less is more” is taken to the extreme. If there are large areas of the room with nothing on the walls or complete empty areas, you probably need a little more furniture and accessories. This also applies if you have nothing on your mantel, your tables, or in your china cabinet.

6. Theme-ing Rooms – I can understand collecting certain things and wanting to display them together in a room. What is bad, is the multi-personality of an overly themed house. One room is teddy bears, this room is fishing equipment, another room is lighthouses, apples, cherries, Harley Davison, your favorite sports team. It may be fun at the time, but it’s overwhelming and confusing for the long term. You soon get tired of it all.

Just finished updating the first floor for a terrific family. The house was custom built in the mid 80's. That was a time before great flooring materials were available and new and weird floor plans were being introduced. People wanted to create multi function living spaces, but the concept was new, so the results included several floor finishes merging into a strange puzzle looking maze. Wallpaper was prevalent it was placed on walls with nowhere to end.
Well all that is history now for this house. Note what I did to the stairs. These enclosed stairways are boring, now this one has some character. I added wooden risers. Looks so much better than all carpet !!

New fabric samples arrived the other day. The 2015 color palette is a throwback to the eighties. Remember the jewel tones? Burgundy, gold and Kelly green? Well they are back along with wedge wood blue. Got a few damasks and plaids as well. It's such a contrast from last year which was still had abstract patterns using clean bright color combinations of yellow, grey and orange.
The next couple years will be transition years, so 'everything' will be available !!!!

Well I just realized that my post that explained our move from the west ridge road (26 th st). Isn't on this page! I don't know where it is! 😳.
Anyway we decided with all the technical ability at stay in touch and communicate today, there is no need for that large office and storefront.
Our business can be run 'on the go' so we moved all the samples etc to our condo in the mercantile building on 14th and state. Not much else has changed, except where we hang our hat and that I now winter in Florida. This is my third year in Florida all winter. All phone calls are still answered and business is conducted from here. To everyone still up north, stay warm and play in the snow!!
