One of our favorites waking up again

This is our Pachypodium cactipes mother plant — the one behind the seeds we harvested about two months ago.

After a quiet dormancy period, it’s fully awake again and now in bloom… bright yellow flowers popping against those thick, spiny stems.

This species grows differently than most Pachypodiums — more compact, more character early on, and once it flowers, it really stands out.

Always a nice moment to see it come back to life like this each season.

Seeds from this plant are now available in our shop for anyone wanting to grow it from the very beginning.

Norfolk Island Pine season is looking good this year 🌲

After a lot of rain in Hawaii, we’re finally expecting a strong crop of Norfolk Island Pine (Araucaria excelsa) seeds this season — one of those years where everything just lines up right.

Harvest is planned for the end of June, and these are always something special. The seeds are hand-picked from the top of the trees — nothing touches the ground — and processed right there in Hawaii for proper drying.

Because they’re a perishable seed, timing matters. Once ready, they’re shipped dry and should be planted within about 30 days (up to 60 days if kept refrigerated around 40°F).

If this is something you’ve been waiting for, feel free to reach out about pre-orders — we’re starting to plan ahead now.

Waiting on Dragon Tree Seeds 🌳✨

Spotted these forming up in the canopy of one of our Dragon Trees… not quite ready yet, but getting there…

It’s always a bit of a waiting game — watching them slowly ripen, checking back, timing it just right before harvest. Every season feels a little different.

Moments like this are our favorite part of seed growing… just keeping an eye on what nature’s doing next. 🌱

While cleaning out one of the old seed rooms, we came across this piece of history — an original handwritten customer order ledger from the early 1980s.

These pages document seed orders from the time when Horace Anderson — the grandfather of Eric Anderson — was running the seed company. We recently took over the business from Eric after his retirement, and today the nursery continues here in Elfin Forest, CA

Looking through these records, we found orders from all over the world. It’s amazing to see how international this seed company already was more than 40 years ago.

It also makes you realize how much technology has changed. Every order was written by hand and carefully filed long before email, online stores, or digital databases existed.

Finding something like this really reminds us of the long history behind this company, and we feel proud to carry that legacy forward.

A little glimpse into the ponytail palm forest here at Elfland Nursery.

These Beaucarnea recurvata have been growing here for many years, forming those incredible swollen trunks and full crowns of cascading leaves. Walking through this part of the property almost feels like stepping into a miniature forest of living sculptures.

Right now the seed clusters are nearly mature, and we’re getting close to harvest. Each one of these panicles holds hundreds of seeds that will soon be collected, cleaned, and added to our seed inventory.

It’s always a special moment in the season when the ponytail palms are this full of seed. A lot of future plants start right here.

From Berry to Seed: Foxtail Fern Harvest

We’re collecting seeds from our Foxtail Fern (Asparagus densiflorus ‘Myersii’), one red berry at a time. These plants have been growing here for years, and it’s always a satisfying moment when the berries turn bright and ready.

More seed stories coming soon from the hills of Elfin Forest. 🌱

🕷️ Nature’s Little Helper
Meet our greenhouse guardian — the Red-backed Jumping Spider (Phidippus johnsoni)!
We never spray in our greenhouse because chemical sprays kill 99% of all insects — including the good ones like this little friend. These tiny hunters help keep harmful pests under control naturally, making them a welcome sight among our plants 🌿

Not Your Average Pachypodium

This is Pachypodium fiherenense — a Madagascan gem that’s got us all excited right now at the nursery. Why? Because this one flowered at just 5 years old, grown from seed!

Its reversed boat-shaped leaf tips are a unique identifier — flip them over and you’ll see that classic cupped shape. It also has fragrant white flowers and deep green foliage, and it’s one of the few pachypodiums we’ve seen that can flower this young.

We’re currently hand-pollinating these in the hopes of finally producing seed again — they didn’t set when we had them outdoors. Fingers crossed we’ll see seed horns in the next few weeks! 🌱

If you’re a collector, this one’s special.

💎 Small but Mighty: The Huachuca Agave

This compact beauty is Agave parryi var. huachucensis — a tight, sculptural rosette with broad, blue-gray leaves and dark spines that contrast beautifully with its form.

Grown from seed right here in Elfin Forest, this variety is known for being incredibly cold hardy (down to 10°F!) and slow growing, making it a stunning low-maintenance addition to any desert-style garden or pot.

They’re small now… but just wait.

The Lamerei That Took a Different Path 🌱

This thick-leaved beauty is unlike any other Pachypodium lamerei we’ve grown. It started as just one seedling, but from early on we noticed something different—what’s called a “low mold height,” meaning it branched out instead of growing a single tall trunk. Then the leaves thickened… and thickened… and kept growing in this short, fat, leathery form.

Now it’s a total standout. We’re watching and waiting for it to flower—because if it does, we may be able to pass on these unusual genetics. It could be a natural mutation or “sport”… and just maybe the start of a new line. 🍃🌱

Swipe to see the comparison with a typical Pachypodium lamerei leaf—huge difference!

Just look at the size of this Dragon Tree!
This photo was taken a while back at the San Diego Botanic Garden, and our 120-pound Great Pyrenees, Thor, had to strike a pose — just to give you a sense of scale. 💪

Dracaena draco, the Dragon Tree, is one of our all-time favorite trees — sculptural, slow-growing, and full of character. We’re lucky to have a number of mature specimens on our farm, and we’ve been growing them from seed for years.

We produce seeds right here in Elfin Forest, ship them around the world, and have some beautiful seedlings coming along too (stay tuned for more posts!). 🌱
