Grow My Garden

Grow My Garden Committed to helping people grow their own food no matter how much space they have. Indoor garden, container garden, patio garden, or back yard!

Start Local, Grow Extra, Expand Our Reach
It’s easy to get started in making a difference. If you already have a garden, you probably already produce more than you can use yourself. If that’s the case, then share your surplus with your family, friends, neighbors, local food pantry, etc. Then, when you’re planning and planting your garden each spring, plan on planting a little extra…plant an extra

row to share with your local food pantry and people in need. The next step is to start a Community Garden. Community Gardens can benefit everyone. Elderly people who can’t garden, people with little or no space for a garden, people
who have never gardened before and need help learning how to garden, people who have needed to move during the growing season and don’t have a garden of their own, people who travel a lot and can not care for a garden. These are just a few examples of people who can benefit from a Community Garden, this does not include all the people in our community that can benefit from the abundant harvest that can come from a Community Garden. The size of the Community Garden directly affects the number of people we will be able to impact. Our first focus should be on our immediate community. Single parents, widows/widowers, children, etc. After we meet the needs of our community we can expand to neighboring communities. We may also be able to supply fresh vegetables to our school lunch program. Once we grow our reach to neighboring communities, the best way we can help others is by education and duplication. We can not grow all the food it takes to feed the world all by ourselves! We can educate others about gardening and how to start a community garden project. Then they will be able to take care of their own community and they will be able to educate others in the same way. This should not be about us solving world hunger, this should be about being a model to others on how we can take care of our community the way God intended for us to. “Love your neighbor as yourself” Romans 13:8-10

CONTAINER GARDEN!
We turned our patio into a container garden! We hardly ever sit on our patio. In the morning and evening there are mosquitos and in the afternoon it’s crazy hot. (We use our screened in porch all the time!)
I was having a hard time getting things planted in the garden because of how wet it was this spring, so I decided to try out container gardening on the patio.
We have kale, cucumbers, zucchini, yellow summer squash, cherry tomatoes, bell peppers, jalapeño peppers, cayenne peppers, sweet banana pepper, strawberries, thyme, oregano, basil, sage and chamomile!
If you’re wanting to be prepared for a food shortage and you don’t know where to start...plant something in some type of container and harvest your own food!

It’s time to plant the garden!!
1. You need a space for your garden. (In the ground, raised beds, containers, etc.) Locate in a space that gets at least half a day of sun.
2. You need to prepare the space.
3. You need plants and/or seeds.
4. You need water.
5. Just get started and figure it out as you go. If you never start you will never harvest anything!

Gardening can be anywhere and any size.
This is a simple clay jardiniere that I planted strawberry plants in. My strawberry patch wasn’t doing very well last year so I decided to let it go back to grass.
I dug these strawberry plants out of the yard yesterday and planted them in the jardiniere. I know I will harvest some strawberries in the weeks to come. As long as I keep it watered, give it some sun and the bees pollinate the flowers, there will be some delicious, homegrown strawberries to enjoy!

The government, in times of need, used to ask the American people to plant gardens and raise chickens to help relieve stress off the food system. During and after the World Wars, they were called Victory Gardens.
If you were asked to grow some of your own food because there was a possible food shortage coming, would you know how?
Do you have any idea how to plant a garden...and then keep it growing so you can harvest something?
Do you know where to get plants or seeds to plant in your garden?
If you answered no to any or all of these questions, you’re not alone! Millions of Americans have no idea how to grow their own food or even where to begin. We have become so removed from where our food comes from that we would be in big trouble if we ever needed to figure it out. (And we may be headed in that direction right now)
NOW is the time to learn and if you are wanting to plant a garden and have a harvest this year, you need to learn quick...it’s time to plan what you will plant.
More to come on gardening classes!

I’m not exactly sure when it started, but I’ve felt an urgency to grow food for a while now, maybe 2014, 2015?

When you think of planting a garden or growing your own food, do you get overwhelmed?
Don’t feel overwhelmed, scared, unqualified, defeated or anything else that’s negative. It doesn’t have to be that way!
Growing your own food can be as easy or as complicated as you want it to be. The first rule is this...YOU do not have to grow EVERYTHING. Especially when you’re getting started, just simply grow one thing, and make sure it’s something that you will actually eat.
Don’t waste your time and space growing things you won’t eat.
What if I could show you how to start your garden without the overwhelm and show you how you can grow what you eat and eat what you grow?

12 Easy Vegetables to Grow in Your Garden.
🌱 Garlic
🌱 Radishes
🌱 Carrots
🌱 Lettuce
🌱 Greens
🌱 Peas
🌱 Green Onions
🌱 Tomatoes
🌱 Peppers
🌱 GreenBeans
🌱 Summer Squash
🌱 Cucumbers
These veggies are easy to grow even if you’re a beginning gardener. There are things you need to know about each of these, but still easy to grow.
Some take more space than others, tomatoes needs some kind of support to keep them off the ground, garlic is a perennial but you can’t harvest all of it and expect it to grow the next season, etc.
If you’re wanting to start growing your own food, we will be having gardening classes this winter and/or spring. We will be announcing the info as soon as we get it finalized.
The most important step in starting a garden is to GET STARTED!

This is a volunteer cherry tomato plant. I did not plant this, a seed or seeds sprouted on their own. I did know it was a tomato and I purposely let it grow.
This is another example of how easy it can be to grow your own food. Sometimes the food tries to grow by itself and if you know what different plants look like you can allow them to grow and even help them out a little and you can harvest something that you didn’t even plant!
