The verdict is in: heirloom chrysanthemums were totally worth the wait!

I was nervous to try growing them, since they have a reputation for being temperamental and labor-intensive. I did my best, but they definitely didn't get "textbook" growing conditions and I think they look great.

This is my very first bloom, with an accompaniment of straggler sunflowers, dahlias, parsley blossoms, winter savory, and rosemary. All picked while wet with dew and hastily arranged in my hand as I cut because I COULD NOT WAIT ANY LONGER.

I'll be using the rest of the blooms I get this season to trial different floristry and preservation techniques (research for next year's floral workshop offerings--stay tuned!), and then take cuttings from these plants to propagate over the winter for spring planting to do it all over again. Can't wait!!

It was another great day slingin' flowers at the Table Bluff Farm Stand in Loleta!

I love to see all the different color combinations people put together for themselves--today folks were feeling very red and orange. Here are just a few of the beauties I was able to snap pictures of before they went to their new homes 💚

The bouquet bar will be back on September 16, and until then the farm stand will be open every Saturday from 10-2 with fresh veggies, pork, and other goodies from local makers.

Growing up, my siblings and I teased our dad a lot about liking "ugly" things. Ugly Christmas tree ornaments, ugly sweaters, you get the idea.

Well, I'm feeling very dad-like today in my love for the 'Incredible Hulk' China Aster (pictured here with dahlias and snapdragons. swipe for close ups). I only planted a few of these this year, but I'll definitely be making room for more next summer!

August brings out the asters! Fun fact: Aster plants are photosensitive, with blooming triggered by decreasing day length.

I can't get enough of the smoky lavender of Moonstone (sourced from ), one of two new varieties in the trial garden this year. I'm very excited about the next one, but it's not quite in full bloom just yet.
