I am working on a bit of a rearrangement in the nursery that gave me a small area for the top props I am always making.

This is a fun way to share my treasures, help my friends save money, and make $$$ for the critters, all at the same time. But I also know lots of people who do not use other people's soil or soil at all.

Water propagation is when you take a stem cutting and submerge it in water to grow adventitious roots.

If you keep the plant in water instead of planting it in soil, it is hydroponics or water culture.

While you should avoid high-salt tap water or water with excessive sodium, the following elements are essential for root development once the cutting begins feeding:

Calcium: Strengthens new root cell membranes. (Found in natural spring water).

Potassium: Supports osmotic regulation, which draws water and nutrients into the new roots.

Phosphorus: Frequently associated with root growth, though many growers and botanical studies find a balanced, diluted ratio (NPK) is more effective than heavy phosphorus alone.

Trace elements (Boron, Iron, Magnesium): Aid in plant metabolism and early enzyme function.

I enjoy making mixed planters that combine several different types of plants together, artfully arranged in a single pot or box to create a dynamic miniature landscape.

They are popular both outdoors (using annuals and perennials) and indoors (using houseplants) to add visual interest, color, and texture.

The thing I love about them is that there are no rules. While you read that to make an arrangement visually striking, gardeners and designers typically follow the "Thriller, Filler, and Spiller" method:

Not me. I like to create mixed planters that thrive because all the plants inside have similar care requirements and don’t outcompete or perish under different conditions. I personally do not know why some plant growers charge so much money for treasures.

Plants are eager to propagate and too easy to create more.

We have this unnamed variety of Angel Wing Begonia. It was donated by Robin and Deb, the previous owners of Harmony, a few years ago.

This begonia was one of many grown. Working down to just a chosen few, as hybridizers, they would use multiple offspring to choose the specific plants we purchase today.

We are blessed to have some amazing cultivars, and I created an entire tray of them for our $1 rack that raises $$$ for the critters.

So, if Ken and I can make and sell plants for $1, why can't other growers? Larger growers?

Plant growers struggle to sell plants more cheaply because of high, continuous overhead, constant inventory loss, and aggressive competition from large commercial operations. I am working on moving and filling the $1 shelf. I am going to lift it higher to make treasure hunting easier.

But you can't buy anything for $1 anymore, especially plants. The U.S. dollar is going through a period of structural rebalancing. While it is not collapsing, its undisputed dominance is facing pressure on two main fronts: its global reserve status and its purchasing power. Please click through to read more...
