The annual Perseids meteor shower will peak this weekend on the night between Aug. 12 and 13, with the best views available for people in the Northern Hemisphere. This is a particularly good year to catch a glimpse of this celestial show because the moon is nearly new, which means its glow won’t obscure fainter meteors as much.

To optimize your meteor-spotting potential, find a comfortable spot outside with minimal light pollution. Those with dark, clearer skies may see as many as 40 meteors per hour during their pre-dawn peak, while people under brighter ones may only see 10 or so, according to NASA.

You don’t have to look at a specific part of the sky to see the Perseids, but these meteors appear to originate from their radiant, which is located in the northeast.

If you angle yourself in that direction and look up between midnight and dawn, you should see quite a few meteors streak across the sky, NASA said. The agency added that if you miss the peak, you may still see a few meteors in the early hours of the morning during the following week.
