We’ve got exciting news from Whatcom Land Trust, Sustainable Connections, and Cloud Mountain Farm Center!

In mid-December, Sustainable Connections will transfer Cloud Mountain to the Whatcom Land Trust for interim ownership and management. The Trust will then place a legal conservation easement on the land and work to find long-term ownership for the farmland. What does this mean for Cloud Mountain? The Trust’s easement will:

💚 Protect Cloud Mountain’s 19 acres of farmland—forever
💚 Limit residential development
💚 Place habitat protections along the stream

The Trust will also support Cloud Mountain’s Processing, Aggregation, Distribution and Storage (PADS) services during their interim management. PADS serves small farm businesses and organizations with cooperative impact, including local farms and food banks. The Trust will not operate Cloud Mountain as a farm or retail operation.

To learn more, please join Whatcom Land Trust for a community meeting at 5 pm on Wednesday, January 7th at Cloud Mountain. Space is limited, so RSVP today to secure your spot at whatcomlandtrust.org/events.

Join Sustainable Connections for a Community Forum on June 17 from 5:30-7 pm at the Rome Grange to discuss recent and upcoming changes at Cloud Mountain Farm Center.

The Sustainable Connections board recently made the difficult decision to divest from the farm by the end of December 2025. We know how important Cloud Mountain is to this community, we hope this gathering will offer space for the public to engage with staff and board members, ask questions, learn more about this transition, and connect.

Cloud Mountain has a rich history with this community and its plants and people. We're sharing some of the farm and nursery's journey in our blog, as well as sharing some of our favorite and most notable plants, gratitude for our partners, and community resources for those looking to grow fruit and ornamentals in this region.

We wanted to remind you that our website remains a resource for education and growing tips, and hopefully our robust archive will guide you in your gardens and orchards.

We will be considerably less active on social media, but we wanted to thank you for being a part of this community. We've loved sharing behind-the-scenes moments, plant and tree care tips, all our events and workshops, and our general love and appreciation for all that grows in Whatcom County.

It is with great sadness that Sustainable Connections announces the closure of the Cloud Mountain Farm Center (CMFC) nursery on June 30th, 2025. CMFC, an educational farm center located in Everson, Washington, has been a part of Sustainable Connections since its official merger in 2019.

Read the full press release: https://bit.ly/4jeUDcd. Stay tuned into our newsletters, social media and websites for info on sales.

CMFC’s nursery has made a lasting impact by building a strong community of farmers, home growers, and educators who inspire others to grow. After four decades of offering educational workshops and an incredible variety of regionally adapted plants, the nursery will end its operations due to funding challenges. As CMFC operational costs have continued to increase, and despite substantial fundraising efforts, Sustainable Connections has not been able to replace the funds lost from a long-standing, large annual donation. This is a significant programmatic loss for Sustainable Connections, and the organization recognizes and shares in the loss that the community may also be feeling with this news.

CMFC will operate at a smaller scale going forward, with a focus on essential site maintenance and its processing, aggregation, and distribution services. Nursery-led workshops will conclude by the end of May and at the end of June, CMFC will close the nursery. The community is encouraged to connect with Sustainable Connections and CMFC newsletters and social media for updates on end of season sales.

Sustainable Connections expresses deep gratitude to the community members, partners, donors, and volunteers who have supported CMFC’s nursery over the years. While this chapter is coming to an end, Sustainable Connections remains committed to serving our local food system through our Food & Farming program, the Eat Local First Collaborative, and our Processing, Aggregation, and Distribution program.
