I know it’s been a minute since I’ve posted, and I wish I could say the “everyone” has been asking where I’ve been. Actually quite a few of you have asked. 😜 But! I’ve been working, super busy in fact, three large scale projects currently that are quite time consuming, along with the rigors of a busy family of 6!

This project is nestled on a beautiful river property above Three Rivers California, right up against the National Park. It’s a concrete, metal and wood structure that will make up an amazing work/hobby shop and storage garage.

Huge thanks to my guys and the subs involved in this project so far. As you all know building during this pandemic has been filled with challenges. Materials shortages and delays, none are immune.

7 days, Friday to Friday. The previous 7 day transformation was more dramatic than this, but we’ll take what we can get.

Frustration - waiting for a 7x24 x 35’ LVL to span the great room that was ordered ~4 weeks ago. Grrr. Originally ordered as a single 55’ beam, which is the way I prefer to set all my beams, I settled and agreed to use a 20’ section and a 35’ section, splitting the beam over a steel column the way the engineer originally had it designed. When the 20’ beam arrived and the 35’ piece did not - Frustration! At this point I still don’t even know when rest of the beam will arrive and it’s keeping us from framing the entire great room main roof. Once that comes in the Friday to Friday will be a drastic change!

These are a few of my favorite things! ☝🏽 Ellis Jacks and ICF, Engineered Beams and TJI’s, Plumwall Braces and welding columns onsite. Rocking it everyday!

Can you spot the radius wall in the ICF? First time we’ve gotten to do one on those!

I can honestly say today I was a bit out of my element. If I’m super honest this whole week has been a stretch. If you’ve followed my stories you’ve seen my guys and I were forming and pouring a massive “head-wall” structure in an agricultural ponding basin used for irrigation. Did I mention I was out of my element?

So I don’t generally consider myself a concrete contractor although we have self performed setting up and pouring many foundations, pads, stem-walls, and ICF structures over the last 25 years. This opportunity from came up just last week and I jumped at it because we had a bit of a gap in our schedule and I felt like I could crank it out and make a couple bucks in a few days, win, win. What I didn’t plan for was just how much prep and time and effort would go into forming a structure that could contain nearly 4 full cement trucks in . That’s what I’m standing on this morning before the first truck arrived. I had fitful sleep last night running through all the worst case scenarios and possible catastrophic failures that in the wee hours of the morning seemed inevitable. As with most things like this, the dawn comes and I have a renewed optimism that all will ACTUALLY go smoothly.

First truck arrived 40 minutes later than scheduled and the mud was considerably wetter than ordered. No matter, we’ll put it in the footings and let it set up for 30-40 and be ok. At least it will be easier to push into place in among this spiderweb of braces. Things went smoothly and only a few minor leaks pushed out of the base of the forms. The first truck emptied and number two back into place at the pump. The consistency of the second truck was perfect. We made 2-3 lifts, pouring 12-18 inches at a time. Truck two, empty. Quick measurements and calculations and the third truck won’t be enough to finish. I called and confirmed a 6 yard cleanup truck just a few minutes before the third truck backed up to the pumped 20 minutes behind schedule.

Truck three was wet, too wet, like 6” plus slump wet. I was on the phone and the guys started to pump again without me. When I walked back over I gulped hard and waved for them to stop. The sides looked great...

Finishing out this AG water storage head-wall form this afternoon. Adding braces and more braces and when in doubt adding another. This has been a fun little project and has certainly stretched us and provided a challenge. We plan to pour the footings and walls in the morning and hope and all goes smoothly and everything holds!

In case anyone was wondering, I’ve been at this construction thing for a long time now. And some days I feel like I’m really old! Cleaning in my office today and ran across some old pics. Hope you enjoy this blast from the past. I spent much of my youth and the beginning of my career working on log homes all over the county and even went to Japan to assemble a log ski lodge.

The last picture shows me swinging from a crane hook. I remember this like it was yesterday. This unfortunately ended with my hand slipping off the hook and falling 18-20’ to the hillside below the house with fully loaded bags. I landed on both feet and rolled, scattering the contents of my pouches down the hill! Thankfully young bones and knees and the grace of God allowed me to get up, shake it off and work the rest of the day, although I was very sore.

I had a ball running the today up in West Sacramento. Thank you Nick and James up at for allowing me to invade your shop for the afternoon. You guys are the best. This is truly an amazing tool and I’m figuring a way to sneak one into my arsenal very soon. Four large slabs for a bar at the all surfaced and ready to load back into the to finish drying before installation in a few months.

What a great birthday weekend ending up in SoCal celebrating a great group of high school graduates. Amazing party with a 20’s theme. My gals all looked fabulous!

As we were walking in my youngest said, “Daddy, I know why they’re doing a 20’s party, because it’s almost the 20’s again!” That got me thinking, the 1920’s are commonly called the “roaring twenties” because of advancement, growth, economy and industry. The 2020’s are shaping up to be an amazing time of advancement, growth, economy and industry a hundred years later. What ideas, plans and goals do you have cooking for this centuries roaring twenties? I know I’ve got a few and would love to hear some of yours. Whether it’s business, family, life, spiritually, financially, or maybe you just want to make it to or through YOUR 20’s!
