If you are just joining us, we sometimes have quite the adventure to get to our off grid cabin in remote interior Alaska. This journey proved no different when trying to haul 19 sheets of plywood through more than 6 feet of snow up a ridge side, which was not an easy task.
This episode and the following episode will take a closer look at the difficulties that we faced in the terrain that we travel across. It’s essential to get the materials there to continue forward progress with building, but getting the materials there is always an absolute challenge.

Honestly, it was about time that we had an easier time on our trails after encountering multiple trips of trouble on the snowmachine. Winter last a long time out here and while it’s finally starting to melt and gave us a tricky time of inaccessible and unchartered snow conditions, we traveled on the snow as much as possible before it turned to concrete slush.

Honestly, it was about time that we had an easier time on our trail...

In this episode Cameron spots a caribou herd across our valley that he attempts to get after, more about that in the next episode, but you get to see how we are off to an interesting start with that. I trial our new kerosene heater we hadn’t yet tried after hauling it out to our off grid cabin. Lastly, I get ambitious and motivated to start our insulation in our shed/workshop/shower house and naturally that does not go as planned, at all.

In this episode we take care of very important, but every day essential tasks of stocking up firewood, inside and out. I complete more snow removal, this time on the shed roof and we hit the trails home, which you can pretty much see a sped up version of the entire trail back to our vehicle. Spoiler alert, I get stuck!

After a brutal 5.5 hours to travel a few miles by snowmachine, spending several hours stuck in the valley in waist to chest deep snow, we finally make it up to the ridge and are able to carry onto our off grid remote cabin. Not without me getting stuck a few more times, two of which were on our very own trail 😂. At this point we were tired and my wonderful husband was more than over shoveling me out 😅. Take a peek at our first look at all of the untouched fresh powder around our property, there was a lot! Roughly an additional 50” had fallen, plus all of the drifting. Oh winter, the gift that keeps on giving…the majority of the year.

Previously you have heard us describe our tough trips into our off grid cabin as mid winter intense snowfall often hits, but this trip was a nightmare, one that will haunt our memories 😅 To travel 6 miles it took us a grueling 5.5 hours. During that time we were buried in chest deep snow, faced with no visibility of any prior trail from just before receiving over 50 inches of fresh snow. We were already forced to use an offshoot of our mail trail through the valley because of serious drifting early in the season.

Due to this the trail was a random path through the forest we did not have engrained into our memories, or marked for that matter. When the fresh snow fell, nothing was visible that anyone has ever roamed the area all winter long. Our trail? Gone! Our base? Non existent! Join us taking a first hand look at the battles we faced in the depths of the snow and the grueling journey we had as we have yet to break through the valley in this episode.

At this point I’m ready for the snow to melt as it’s not good to travel on and I want summer dirt trails.

There are many reasons that you should follow me and enjoy the adventure to see everything we do here in Alaska from off grid, homesteading, life in Alaska, in general, gardening, canning, reservation, prepping, hunting, fishing, camping, hiking, animals, and of course, last, but not least working on cars
