The increasing use of convenient digital applications across various sectors such as banking, healthcare, e-commerce, and e-wallets has driven a growing need for identity verification and Know Your Customer (KYC) processes. While these digital utilities bring convenience, they also attract new security threats. In the early stages, digital ID systems often relied on static photos or scanned physical documents, which were highly vulnerable to forgery and misuse. Today, fraudsters have become more sophisticated, using AI-driven techniques such as deepfake videos, voice cloning, and realistic 3D models to impersonate others.

In 2023 alone, identity fraud affected 15 million people in the United States, resulting in $43 billion in losses, many cases powered by AI-generated content. One of the biggest vulnerabilities in current biometric systems is their inability to detect whether the presented data is genuine or fabricated. Criminals exploit this weakness to trick verification systems achieving success rates as high as 90%. Highlighting this dark side of biometric technology underscores the urgent need for stronger, more reliable in-person verification methods to ensure the authenticity of each identity check.
