FREE Tour of an Innovative Home with Sustainability Top-of-Mind
Sunday, October 22, 11am or 2pm
Registration: www.bit.ly/3ZKgsbn
Fairfield architect Leigh Overland’s new home adjacent to Ash Creek is a marvel of sustainable and environmentally friendly design and construction – employing a range of innovative building approaches for a house that is more energy efficient, healthier, and safer than one constructed using traditional methods. Residents will have an opportunity to view the home up close and learn about potential sustainability improvements for their own homes at a special SFTF Net Zero & Sustainable Home Event, on Sunday, Oct. 22. Tours of Mr. Overland’s home will be offered at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. that day.
Mr. Overland’s 3,000-square-foot, three-story, three-bedroom home features insulated concrete exterior walls, insulated panel roofs, metal stud interior walls and floors, in-floor radiant heat/cooling, and triple pane European doors and windows. According to Mr. Overland, such homes, which can be constructed in any style or size, cost the same or less than traditional wood construction but are storm-, fire-, mold-, rot-, mildew-, and termite-proof while saving significantly on utility and insurance costs; solar panels can yield even more cost savings.
Although building a new home from the ground up provides a major opportunity for sustainable design, the event on October 22 also will feature information and displays on existing homes around Fairfield that have undergone major energy/sustainability upgrades, with the goal of inspiring homeowners to consider enhancements they could readily apply for even more energy efficient, comfortable and healthful homes.
The event also will provide information on other SFTF initiatives supporting residential approaches for energy efficiency, including heat pumps, solar energy and battery storage systems.
