Don’t let the name fool you — Blue-Eyed Grass (Sisyrinchium angustifolium) isn’t actually a grass at all! This charming Connecticut native perennial is part of the iris family and brings delicate star-shaped blue-violet flowers to the landscape from late spring into early summer. Its slender, grass-like foliage makes it perfect for naturalistic gardens, pollinator pathways, rain gardens, and meadow plantings.
Blue-Eyed Grass is a compact native plant that fits beautifully into small gardens, borders, and container plantings. Despite its delicate appearance, it’s surprisingly tough — thriving in full sun to part shade and tolerating a range of soil conditions, especially moist, well-drained soils.
Pollinators love it too! Native bees and small beneficial insects are attracted to its nectar-rich blooms, helping support local ecosystems and biodiversity right here in Connecticut. Because it naturally forms tidy clumps, it’s an excellent low-maintenance choice for eco-friendly landscaping and native plant gardens.
