Harold Bray is a beloved hometown hero in Benicia, California. A retired Benicia Police Department officer, he is the last surviving crew member of the USS Indianapolis. The city honored his legacy with a permanent monument on First Street.The city of Benicia deeply reveres Mr. Bray for both his military bravery and his decades of local service. Key local details include:Life & Police Service: Bray enlisted in the Navy at 17 and survived the tragic sinking of the USS Indianapolis in 1945. He later settled in Benicia, serving as a police officer for nearly 20 years.The Harold Bray Monument: A 7-foot-tall bronze statue sculpted by Matt Glenn honors him.
