We are excited to be part of this bright community dedicated to sustainability! The recent Sustainability @ South Summit gathered at the Pelican's Nest in Fairhope with The University of South Alabama and USA Health faculty, student representatives, building and grounds staff, and sustainability leaders from Mobile, Fairhope, Daphne, and Gulf Shores.

The retreat is part of the larger “Sustainability at South” initiative at USA that provides a platform for hands-on learning and applied science to advance sustainability through interdisciplinary research, student training and coursework, and nature-based solutions developed and utilized on campus.

Using the campus as their living laboratory, Sustainability at South is an inspiring approach to fostering environmental stewardship and biodiversity conservation, ultimately preparing future sustainability leaders here on the Gulf Coast and beyond. Examples of their work include a new community garden on campus serving students with intellectual disabilities, demonstration sites for low impact stormwater management on campus, and student engagement in tracking campus water, energy, and carbon. We can't wait to see what's next!

This Memorial Day, we honor those who have given everything in service to our country.

Watershed is proud to work with American Legion Post 199, Fairhope AL, a cornerstone of the Fairhope community through veterans' services, disaster relief, emergency response, and so much more. With their new Clubhouse recently completed, Phase II of their building campaign still lies ahead: the revitalization of their historic Legion Hall.

They need your support to bring this vision to life! Please consider donating to help preserve this landmark, and join Post 199 for their Memorial Day ceremony and barbecue!

The connection between energy consumption and environmental health hits close to home in "Sallie's Ashes," an award-winning, Oscar-qualifying short documentary about a Fairhope grandmother and activist fighting to relocate 21 million tons of toxic coal ash stored in an unlined pit along the Mobile River. It's a powerful reminder of why the decisions we make about energy – in our buildings, our homes, our communities – matter deeply.

Catch the May 15 film screening at the Gulf Coast Eco Center and hear Sallie's story for yourself (registration required): https://www.movetheash.com/film-screenings

It's spring migration season, and billions of birds are navigating the night skies. In our little town, we're seeing the purple martins return to the martin houses along the bay, hummingbirds buzzing around the office, and spiraling "swiftnados" of chimney swifts circling overhead at sunset.

But artificial light at night can disorient them, pulling them off course and into dangerous collisions with buildings. It's not just a big-city problem; homes and commercial buildings everywhere contribute to the issue. While light can be a necessity at night, we can take steps to minimize its impact on birds and other wildlife, such as closing drapes at night and turning off lights when possible.

Our team is going all in on the "Less Lawn, More Life" challenge – both at home and at the Watershed office. We hope you'll join us!

Every patch of lawn transformed into native habitat helps restore biodiversity, support pollinators, and reconnect us to the living world right outside our doors.

Don't miss the kickoff webinar this Thursday, May 7, at 6 p.m. featuring indigenous botanist Robin Wall Kimmerer, author of Braiding Sweetgrass. Then sign up to join the free 12-week program! Each week, a short expert-led challenge will drop in your inbox. Pick a spot in your yard. Plant one native. Learn to identify what's actually growing there. Each week builds on the last, and none of it requires starting over from scratch or knowing what you're doing.

Congratulations to Watershed architects Jessica Tolbert and Katie Allsup, both now credentialed LEED Green Associates!

Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) is the most widely used green-building certification in the world, having moved the market toward a healthier built environment over the last 25+ years. The LEED Green Associate (GA) credential demonstrates an ongoing commitment to designing better buildings, whether or not they pursue certification.

The annual Living Future conference brings together practitioners, policymakers, and industry leaders to tackle the real-world barriers to regenerative buildings – from carbon and materials to cost, policy, and delivery.

From Watershed founder Rebecca Dunn Bryant:

"If I had to capture the past few days at Living Future in one word, I would have to say, heartfelt. This year, more than any other, I was struck by the heart that everyone I met brought to their work. Not just artists or writers but engineers, architects, constructors, de-constructors, facility managers, landscape architects, product manufacturers, biomimetics, doctors, teachers, foresters, esteemed elder mad scientists, and storytellers.

"As far as I know there were only three of us in attendance from Alabama (architect, engineer, and farmer/physician) but there was no shortage of living projects and leaders in hot humid climates across the southeast. That’s a change from the early days!

"This community of change makers is extraordinary. I always leave inspired, but this year I also feel recharged with an 'effervescent sense of possibility' that I hope to share back home."

“Nature is not a place to visit. It is home.” – Gary Snyder

This Earth Month, we salute the businesses, schools, and homeowners that are healing nature at home! We depend on healthy, productive ecosystems to provide so many services that we take for granted – making oxygen, absorbing carbon, pollinating crops, and filtering stormwater.

These systems are breaking down in the face of habitat loss and climate change, and they won’t be healed by preserving islands of nature in parks. We must protect and restore nature in our own communities and backyards.

This month, help improve and protect Alabama's coastal environment at a local Earth Day event!

We’re proud to see our Petite Charbon project highlighted in Southern Living! The photo appears in the "groundbreakers" profile of Alex Cary, director of Fortified market development at IBHS and a longtime friend of Watershed's.

Our relationship with Alex goes back to 2009, Watershed's very first year, when we collaborated with her on Baldwin County Habitat for Humanity's Greenbuild '09 – a LEED Gold certified affordable home. Alex was the construction manager for Habitat at the time and oversaw that groundbreaking project.

Since then, we've worked with her on numerous Fortified Homes and the first pilot projects to earn Fortified Commercial certification, but her influence goes well beyond those individual buildings. Alex's work behind the scenes is having a real and lasting impact on Gulf Coast communities, and we are delighted to see her commitment to resilient, sustainable building celebrated!

Today is the Spring Equinox, a threshold celebrated by cultures dating back millennia. As spring emerges, we find ourselves shaking off the darkness of winter: decluttering, stowing cozy sweaters, and breaking out the sandals.

Watershed’s work is inspired by nature’s capacity to renew itself and begin again, a cyclical reinvention that is both informed by the past and adapted for the present. As longer, hotter days return, we’re reminded why climate-responsive design matters more than ever. From careful site planning to passive solar strategies and shading, we have a broad toolkit at our disposal to work with the sun, not against it. This season is an ideal time to improve the energy efficiency of your home or office before the sky-high temperatures of summer (and corresponding utility bills) set in.

One of the questions we hear most frequently comes from people who want to improve their current home, not build a new one. They want to know who can help them get started. While a professional energy audit is the ideal way to diagnose energy waste and strategize for cost-effective improvements, professional energy auditors are not plentiful in our market. So we'd like to share this simple guide for homeowners: https://www.energy.gov/energysaver/do-it-yourself-home-energy-assessments
