Men and women dressed proper, and showing that they have some self respect and pride. They're not running around in pajamas like people do nowadays. I might run to Walmart in my sweats if it's late enough, but I typically won't leave the house unless I'm dressed if I know I've gotta get out of the truck. I'll sometimes drop a kid at school, or camp, etc., in sweats, but only if I'm just dropping them. Somewhere along the way people stopped caring, and having any pride in their appearance. I was taught that it wasn't about vanity or impressing others, it was about your self pride, the way you felt about yourself, and was a reflection of how you carried yourself and conducted day to day business. "Dress for success" is the way it was presented to me, and although as a builder I'm wearing ragged, stained clothes, and I myself match what I'm wearing most of the time, in my off time I still "dress for success" as my grandpa who's now 90 always told me to.
