Just a friendly reminder on pear trees. Most European pears MUST be picked before they fully ripen. If they are allowed to ripen on the tree they will rot from the core out. Luscious and Patten ripen around mid September so there is time for those 2 varieties. Early Gold and Parker should be very close to picking time now and either put in the fridge to store or allowed to ripen a few days on the counter. Summercrisp should be close to being ripe and since it is a European crossed with an Asian pear it can be tree ripened, that said it will not ripen anymore after it has been picked. If refrigerated Summercrisp can last 1 to 2 months. The Ure Pear should also be picked fairly soon and either be refrigerated to store it or allowed to ripen on the counter. Juicy Jewel Asian pear should be rather close to being ripe. That being an Asian pear will not ripen anymore after being picked. Again like the others refrigerate it so it will keep longer. A couple easy ways to tell if your pears are ready is to grab one and lift it up to above being horizontal to its stem and if the stem breaks that should be good. Another easy way to tell is by looking around the tree and seeing if there are any pears that have fallen off of the tree. For further information please Google the varieties you have and look for other tips and tricks. Like I said if you dont pick most of the varieties early they will be inedible.

Finally some cooler weather. What a great time to add in some more perennials or plant a tree or shrub in the yard.

As we get closer to the infestation of the emerald ash borer we should be asking ourselves have we planted any trees to replace them in our yards, or are we just going to wait until they all die and have no shade? We are talking about an insect that will kill 99% of the ash trees. To put it into perspective there are roughly 112 ash trees per person in North Dakota and in 5 to 10 years almost every single one of them will be killed. This will be an issue we will deal with soon and I'd rather be proactive than reactive. Without being proactive we will be entering Dust Bowl 2.0! Here is an AI image I had generated to show what to look for and what is going to happen, not might but will.
