Reworked contaminated substrate

Always cleaning up behind other trades.

On this project, asbestos abatement was poorly executed. Abatement crews had to return after failing state air quality tests, and residual adhesive was left behind, requiring additional rework. Once I received clearance, I conducted thorough pre-installation testing and proceeded with the flooring installation.

Five years later, I received a call indicating tiles were lifting, seemingly without any adhesive present. Fortunately, I had documented all moisture and pH testing in compliance with ASTM F710 protocols.

Ultimately, core sampling revealed that the abatement crews had used a soybean-based adhesive remover during their rework. Over time, residual soybean remover migrated upward through the concrete capillaries, deteriorating the adhesive and causing the floor failure.

Thankfully, my thorough pre-installation data and prior experience with a similar situation at another school—where I’d personally observed soybean-based adhesive remover being used—enabled me to identify the issue promptly.

This one was fun, removed carpet and pad to install a Raskin LVP dry back floor We raised subfloor to meet ceramic tile so we could skim coat CT make all on floor. Came out great

How about prepping the floor properly. The telegraphing subfloor voids manufacter’s warranties.
