Evolution of a summer cottage. We are working closely with our clients to renovate their longtime family cottage and wanted to share our progress in what was once a sleeping porch. From the existing conditions to design renderings, selective demolition, reframing, and window installation. We selected the window colors based on the existing cottage trim colors to anchor the new with the memory of what was. Once finished, this cottage will be ready for a few more generations of summer fun.

This home is unique for so many reasons - multigenerational living, clarity of design, a wooded lot near the beach, healthful design and materials meeting standard, cutting edge sustainable choices at each step of the project, and fabulous, fun, kind clients. Site visits to our project near the Berkshires have been especially joyful with the incredible snow we have. Our builder, , created platforms for our client to test views from their future home. We love doing this whenever possible. Kelly and Jill also reviewed mock-ups of the stone walls for the site and brought samples of other materials for the project to look at in context with the stone and the natural material on site. This is a crucial part of our process to ensure the material palette for the home sits well with the landscape. Lastly, we saved time for a few sled runs!

We are dedicated to our clients from the very beginning to the very end. Designing a home or renovation is all encompassing and can be overwhelming. We are river guides. Each journey is unique and we’ve spent our lives learning this river. We know when to add more team members, when to slow down to consider, when to push forward to meet our goals, and how to have fun along the way. We love every step of the process from the first pencil sketch to move in day and beyond.

These teams often include landscape architects, contractors and builders, civil, structural, and mechanical engineers, envelope consultants, and lighting and technology designers and integrators. The home is carefully positioned to remain low-profile within its neighborhood context, while maximizing light, privacy, and connection to the landscape. A wonderful team collaboration brought thoughtful siting, a robust envelope, advanced energy systems and sustainable materials.
