Craftwell Architecture + Construction

Craftwell Architecture + Construction High-end architecture firm specializing in custom homes, cabins, and commercial projects
(1)

Craftwell’s residential design roots began when the firm’s founder, Chris Hawley, designed and built his family’s cabin near his hometown of Minot, ND, prior to his graduating from architecture at NDSU in 2004. The cabin’s design is characterized by serendipitous architectural details that reference the North Dakota prairie, his family’s agricultural roots and his strong Scandinavian heritage. The

core beliefs used then (a passion for residential design, architecture as storytelling, it’s all about the details and North Dakota design excellence) eventually led to the defining beliefs that founded CHA in 2011 with Chris as a solo practitioner of architecture. Within the last 4 years, the demand for our firm’s custom architectural designs and ability to provide seamless design/build services resulted in the expansion to 8 full-time staff. The request for our architectural services beyond residential design has meant two of those staff members lead commercial and multi-family projects. Currently, over 80% of our portfolio includes custom high-end residential homes, totaling nearly $200million dollars of work from over 400 projects. Chris also founded Radiant Homes in response to our clients request for seamless design/build experience. Due to the rapid growth and success of Chris’ businesses, he was nominated for the FM Chamber of Commerce ‘Entrepreneur of the Year Award. Our firm prides itself in our ability to help clients develop a building program that creates a truly one-of-a-kind, timeless project you will be satisfied with for years to come. We love the challenge of hammering out function, flow and design aesthetic with you. Our ability to program ranges from site master planning to door hardware selection. Our team has extensive residential experience representative of various styles including Prairie School, Modern, Contemporary, Classical, Arts & Crafts, and many more.

A family lake cabin renovation in Minnesota lakes country, designed with a low, grounded profile and deep hipped roofs. A covered entry and dark exterior finishes give the home a quiet presence. The sketched re-defined plan organizes living spaces to face the water, with direct lake views and a deck extending the interior outward, creating a simple and connected retreat for time at the lake.

Exterior renderings of a Fargo home remodel that redefines both the outside and inside, shown here through a refreshed exterior expression. Exposed wood columns, trusses, and beams sit on stone-wrapped bases, while covered entry elements and swooping roof forms with rafter tails bring character and depth. At the rear, an outdoor entertaining space with a firepit extends the home beyond its walls.

Before and after of a two-story Texas home within the same framework, refining a traditional expression through larger glazing openings and an extended front porch overhang. Shifts in openings and form bring more light, presence, and connection to the exterior while maintaining the original character.

Drawings from a site visit document the existing structure and capture early observations of the space. Paired with a reimagined cabin rendering, they illustrate the transition from current conditions to a refined A-frame concept with shed roof additions, a defined porch and entry, and a deck extending living space into the landscape.

Interior renderings paired with in-progress construction photos of the new Minot Builders Supply office highlight the transformation of a working warehouse into a refined workplace. The design carries forward the building’s industrial character through exposed trusses and brick, while introducing expanded glazing, clean detailing, and a more elevated office environment.

The side-by-side views capture the process as the space takes shape, bridging its existing structure with a more polished and functional setting for daily use.

Designed for lake days that start at the dock and end around the fire, this lakes country family cabin opens fully to the water. The rear lakeside elevation layers a covered patio, drop-down screen porch with outdoor fireplace, and a sheltered entertainment area that extends living outdoors. Sliding pocket glass doors and a pass-through window connect the kitchen to an outdoor bar, making it easy to move between swimming, cooking, and gathering, all with the lake as the backdrop.

Pelican Shore is a cottage-style family retreat designed to bring generations together on the edge of Pelican Lake. A collection of structures, including the main cabin, guest house, garage, and support buildings, creates a flexible setting for gathering, hosting, and long summer stays.

Inside, the home is organized around shared spaces, with a central living and dining area flowing into a vaulted sunroom oriented to the lake, while private suites provide comfort and retreat. Natural materials like fieldstone, cedar shake, and copper accents define the exterior, giving the project a timeless lakeside character rooted in tradition and connection.

A more resolved look at this Colorado home as it settles into the landscape. The form remains defined by a prominent shed roof with a smaller companion volume at the garage, now paired with fully vertical wood cladding and integrated sun screening. A soft interior glow contrasts the natural setting, while expansive rear glazing opens the home to mountain views, with native landscaping reinforcing a quiet connection to place.
