On the heels of the devastation yesterday, we are available to help with cleanup.

There are many "tree companies" that can help with cleanup up, there are fewer ARBORISTS who can evaluate your specimen trees to determine if future hazards exist.

Unfortunately, almost exactly a year after a similar post, we are being inundated with concerned customers who are seeing signs of Beech Leaf Disease (BLD) in abundance this year. Thankfully, we are able to offer some mitigative treatments that have shown great promise under observation from several state cooperative extensions. Know the early signs and reach out to discuss treatment with our arborist as treatment should be taking place fairly soon to ensure a two stage treatment can take place this growing season.

Everyone hates the cold weather in CT. But did you know that with these cold nights and days, Connecticut's forests and urban landscapes may be saved? Southern pine beetle and hemlock woolly adelgid (pictured below) see dramatic decreases in populations when temperatures drop to near zero for prolonged periods. Given the past few winters didn't feature prolonged cold stretches, populations of southern pine beetle and hemlock woolly adelgid have grown unchecked.

While we all hate heating costs this cold winter, we hope these stretches of cold weather can save some of Connecticut's most important native species: Eastern hemlock (Tsuga canadensis), white pine (Pinus strobus) and pitch pine (Pinus rigida) as well as non native but important ornamental pines from red pine, Scotts pine, and Austrian pine (Pinus resinosa, Pinus sylvestrus, Pinus nigra)

As always, make sure your tree care company employs an arborist to help with diagnosis, treatment and education about the trees on your property.

There's growing concern in CT about a 1-2 punch to American beech trees (fagus grandifolia). Beech bark disease and beech leaf disease are running rampant in CT right now. While treatment is possible for beech bark disease (we treat the insect that creates a wound that allows a fungus to get into the bark), treatment is not currently available for beech leaf disease.
Our arborists are currently examining trees throughout the state to monitor and document the growth of these parasitoids of beech trees in CT.
Beech trees currently comprise roughly 5% of CT's forests. 1 on every 20 trees in CT is a beech tree. Be on the lookout for these issues with beech trees, and as always, contact a licensed arborist if you have concerns over trees on your property.
