Topping a tree doesn't make it safer. It starts a chain of events that ends with a dangerous tree — and usually with removal. 🌿

Tree topping (removing the main scaffold branches and cutting back to stubs) is the most destructive and expensive practice in urban tree care. Every large-diameter cut into the trunk is a wound the tree cannot fully compartmentalize. Decay fungi — the kind that hollow out wood from the inside — enter through these openings and work their way through the heartwood for years. A topped tree that looks like it's recovering is often rotting internally. A decade later it gets declared hazardous and removed. The topping created the hazard it was supposed to prevent.

What happens instead of safe, contained growth: topped trees produce vigorous vertical watersprouts from just below the cuts — fast-growing, weakly attached shoots that lack the structural wood of the original scaffold branches. These shoots break in wind events. The emergency response to a broken topped-tree limb costs significantly more than the original tree care would have.

The alternative approach — structural pruning — removes only dead wood, crossing branches, and limbs with narrow attachment angles. It respects the tree's natural architecture, requires work every 3 to 5 years instead of annually, and produces trees that are structurally sound, self-managing, and significantly longer-lived.

An untopped mature shade tree in a residential yard or street typically canopies 600 to 800 square feet, reducing summer temperatures in its shadow zone by 10 to 15°F. The same tree, repeatedly topped, produces a fraction of that shade while actively weakening its own structure.

For wildlife: the large primary scaffold branches of mature trees are where woodpeckers excavate, chickadees nest, and bats roost. Topping removes exactly this structure. Structural pruning that maintains the scaffold branches preserves these resources.

If you're hiring tree work, the phrase to ask for is ISA-standard structural pruning — and any arborist who recommends topping as a safety measure should be a red flag. The International Society of Arboriculture, USDA Forest Service, and Cooperative Extension programs across the US all classify topping as harmful practice. 🌱

An untopped tree is a growing asset. A topped tree is a managed liability.

🚒🐱 Not all of our calls are for trees and lawn care!

Today, the Darlington Heights Volunteer Fire Department called us out to assist with a cat rescue. Thankfully, this turned out to be the easiest cat rescue yet!

This beautiful calico kitty came right to me and, without a fight, allowed me to safely bring her back down to her relieved owners. It’s not every day that a tree service gets called in for a feline rescue, but we’re always happy to lend a hand when our community needs us.

A big thank you to the Darlington Heights Volunteer Fire Department for their dedication to serving our area. Supporting our community is what we do, whether it’s removing hazardous trees, responding after storms, helping with lawn care, or rescuing a cat from a tree.

We’re grateful for the opportunity to help and even happier that this sweet kitty made it home safely! ❤️🐾

🌳💪 SHEW WHAT A DAY! 💪🌳

Long day? Absolutely.

But when the mission is taking care of our customers, we lace up our boots and get it done.

Today the heat definitely turned up on us during the second job, but our troops pushed through and delivered another successful day of tree work. 🇺🇸

A huge THANK YOU to Heritage Fi****ms and Mr. Banton for trusting American Soldier Lawncare & Tree Service with your project in Meherrin, Virginia. We truly appreciate the opportunity and your support of our veteran-owned business.

As you can see from these photos, what started as large trees towering over structures and property ended with a safer, cleaner, and more open landscape. One of the removals revealed significant internal decay and heart rot that wasn’t visible from the outside—another reminder that not all dangerous trees look dangerous until it’s too late.
