🪵 Is Your Deck Rotting Beneath Your Feet?

Rot is one of the most common—and most dangerous—issues we find during deck inspections. The scary part? It usually hides in plain sight until it’s too late.

šŸ” How Can You Tell If Your Deck Has Rot?
Watch for these warning signs:
• Soft or spongy spots on boards or stairs
• Green or black stains (algae, mold, or mildew)
• Splintering or cracked wood, especially at the ends
• Rusty nails or fasteners pulling loose
• A ā€œbouncyā€ feeling when you walk across it
• Visible rot under the deck—especially at joists, posts, or the ledger board

āš ļø What Happens If You Ignore It?
• Board Breaks – One wrong step could lead to a serious fall.
• Railing Failure – Rotted posts can’t support weight. A wobbly railing is a big red flag.
• Total Collapse – If the framing or ledger is compromised, the entire deck could fail.
• Danger to Kids & Pets – A rotted deck isn’t just ugly—it’s unsafe for the people you love.

🚨 Why Is Water POURING Out of This Deck Post?! šŸ˜³šŸ’¦

This is what we found after pulling up to a home to give a free estimate . . .

We pulled back a little trim (and a nail) and—boom—straight-up water started draining from inside the post like a faucet. No joke.

What you’re seeing here is a rotted-out support post that’s been soaking up water like a sponge for who knows how long. The nails? They’re rusted. The wood? It’s toast. The inside? Wet, soft, and ready to fail.

šŸ‘‰ So, what causes this?

āœ… Lack of post caps
āœ… No proper drainage
āœ… Posts set directly in concrete without a barrier
āœ… Sealants never applied (or long worn off)
āœ… Poor flashing or water management above

Over time, moisture gets trapped inside, especially in posts that are hollow or boxed in. Once water gets in, it stays in—and rot doesn’t take long to do its thing.

šŸ’” How Do You Prevent This from Happening to YOUR Deck or Fence:

šŸ”¹ Always use post caps to keep water from entering from the top
šŸ”¹ Seal or treat exposed wood regularly
šŸ”¹ Use gravel and concrete correctly at the base—never just pour concrete around bare wood
šŸ”¹ Make sure your deck or structure has proper drainage
šŸ”¹ Check your posts annually for soft spots or signs of moisture

šŸ› ļø If your posts haven’t been checked in a while… now’s the time. A quick inspection today can save you thousands tomorrow. Need help? We’re happy to take a look. No charge and no strings attached.

Another Day, Another Fence Built to Last šŸ‘Š

We’re just about wrapped up on this black chain link fence install—and we couldn’t be prouder of how it’s turning out.

This one features a clean concrete curb at the base, which does more than just look sharp. That footer helps keep the fence strong, keeps critters out, and helps prevent erosion on sloped or wooded terrain like this one. It’s a small detail with a big impact—and it’s the kind of thing we take pride in doing right.

No shortcuts. No guesswork. Just quality work that stands the test of time.

If you’re thinking about fencing in your yard, securing a hillside, or simply giving your property some clean lines and peace of mind, we’d love the opportunity to help.

šŸ“Proudly serving all of with craftsmanship you can count on.

Your deck isn’t just for people…it should be a place your pets love, too! If your furry best friend loves lounging outside as much as you do, here are three simple ways to make your deck more pet-friendly:

Add Shade & Shelter 🌿
Just like us, dogs and cats need a break from the sun. A pergola, umbrella, or even a shady corner with a pet bed can keep them cool and comfy on warm days.

Use Pet-Safe Materials šŸ›
Choose decking materials that stay cooler underfoot and are safe for paws. Composite decks are splinter-free, and pet-friendly sealants can prevent slips and overheating.

Create a Cozy Corner 🐶
Set up a small area with a water bowl, toys, or a soft outdoor rug. Bonus points for a little ramp if your pup isn’t a fan of stairs!

Because when your deck feels like home to the whole family—paws included—it becomes a space for even more great memories. šŸ”ā¤ļøšŸ•ā€šŸ¦ŗ

Have a pet that loves your deck? Drop a pic in the comments…we’d love to see!

PROUD DAD POST

My son asked to work with us (Heritage Outdoor Living) this summer. This is his first job. No easing into the work world for him.

Yesterday he was lugging 60lb bags of concrete and pouring a patio that we’ll start building on next week.

Today he was helping on a large fence install. So glad he’s getting trained up by his Uncle Aaron and Josh. Really appreciate them taking care of him and showing him the ropes.

Very proud of the man he’s becoming. He has t had to learn a work ethic. I thank God that he was born with it. His team lead and the project manager tell me he never talks and never complains. Just works. James (Project Manager) even mentioned he wished he was 18 and weighed about 20-30 more pounds. Lol

Thanks for reading my sappy Dad post.
