This week, Roger Mercer, founder of Mercers’ Garden, a founding member of the Cape Fear Botanical Garden, and writer of the local “Garden Column” for Fayetteville’s newspaper passed away.
He was 76 years old.

He passed at Cape Fear Valley Hospital surrounded by family.

His family is currently making arrangements. This page will post updates, as information becomes available, for those who wish to show their love, support, or connection.

Here he’s explaining his savage breeding program that forces his daylilies to compete with other vegetation for survival. Only the strongest, hardiest, and most beautiful flowers are kept for breeding.

How do we guarantee that we have the most-hearty, most-resilient, most disease-resistant, and most-beautiful daylilies on the planet?

Simple- we put them through Hell!

We purposefully force our daylilies to either thrive or die. We make them compete for survival by forcing them to live in thick, weed-filled beds throughout the year. Only the most beautiful and resilient flowers are kept for our breeding program year-after-year.

The result, you get incredibly gorgeous daylilies that are damned hard to kill.

So, when even amateur gardeners, with two brown thumbs, want to know how to grow our daylilies so that they’ll live for years, that’s easy: just don’t plant them too deep, and water them.
