For those interested, clover is the new lawn. No pesticides, no mowing, helps pollinators, drought resistant, no high water bills! I've seen many of our clients getting rid of theIr lawns for this option. That, and garden beds that are full of perennials that are self sustaining. I personally have removed all my grass, and have only beds, and planted clover. So worth the initial investment (which is seed, and water to get it going!) Then NO maintenance!.

The hose on the wall hasn't been uncoiled in six weeks. Everything in the garden is thriving in the middle of July.

No sprinkler. No timer. No drip line on a schedule. Five systems are doing the work instead.

🌧️ How they stack:

- Rain barrel — one inch of rain on a modest roof section fills multiple barrels. Elevate them on cinder blocks and gravity alone pushes water through a soaker hose at soil level. No pump, no electricity

- Mulch blanket — three inches of straw, wood chips, or shredded leaves over the soil surface. Blocks most evaporation, keeps the root zone cool in 90°F heat, and breaks down into fertilizer by fall

- Deep-rooted perennials — comfrey and artichoke send roots several feet down, tapping moisture that shallow annuals can't reach. They pull it into the upper root zone where neighboring plants benefit

- Swale — a shallow channel along the uphill edge of the bed. Landscape runoff that would drain across the yard gets captured and directed into the garden instead. Dig it once

- Soaker hose under mulch — connected to the barrel spigot, laid at soil level, hidden under the mulch layer. Open the valve when the barrel is full. Low and slow, exactly how roots prefer it

Rain hits the roof. The barrel catches it. Gravity moves it. Mulch holds it. Deep roots pull from below. The swale catches what runs off.

The hose stays coiled. That's the whole review. 🌿

Hello. We are the Leaves. Sorry we’re still sitting in your garden beds and under your bushes in March.
You want to rake us up and "clean" the yard, but please wait! Right now, thousands of beneficial bees, ladybugs, and butterflies (like the Luna Moth) are still sleeping in our layers.
94% of butterflies and moths spend the winter in the leaf litter.
If you bag us up today, you’re bagging up the pollinators that make your garden beautiful. We are the "insulation" that keeps the next generation of life alive.
What to do: Wait until the temperature is consistently above 50°F for a week before you do your spring "cleanup." Let the bugs wake up first!
We’re sorry we look "unkept." But the garden will be exploding with life because of us.

To our lovely customers, thanks for patience! May snow AGAIN this week. Mother Nature dictates our cleanups, and we want to be responsible to the plants, and also the city, as the pick up for refuse doesn't begin until the first full week of April! DM, call or text and we will surely put you on the calendar. It's been a frustrating to be sure. Happy Easter weekend to all!
