A couple of years ago I was sitting in our favorite place with my wife when I overheard a lady swearing about something. I knew it was remodeling and I asked
What’s wrong? I got an earful of typical contractor rip off stories and learned she had given a guy $6,000 cash up front for a kitchen he estimated would be $13,000.
I told her she shouldn’t have paid cash and of course, I could look into it for her. Her boss was happy to get her angst deflected so he could have a happy “happy hour”.
I went over the day he was supposed to come back (lives 90 miles away) and acted like her project manager. I asked him all the trick questions to see what his plan was, and he could tell he was in trouble. We went and discussed it off to the side and I told the lady that this guy couldn’t be trusted.
I offered to finish her kitchen if she did exactly what I recommended.
Long story longer, she got ripped off again by not using the people I recommended. Now she had a hack job kitchen with poor quality work, no trim, no details, and it was another $9000 down the drain .
I finished it out and it ended up costing her $20/hr for me (charity rate) and another $ 3,000 in details and finishes. She spent $18-$19,000 on a $14,000 kitchen by being a bit too stubborn.
It helped sell her house in one showing when she passed away just a few months after we finished it. I enjoy helping people and she needed it!
Pics of the mess and how it ended up before paint on the new pantry.
