It feels like just last week that it was still summertime at the Upton Community Center. The trees were green, families were playing on the playground designed by Dodson & Flinker, and there was a line for ice cream in front of the Community Center building designed by Turowski2Architecture. Lovely places like these give us something to look forward to when it's suddenly, grey November. If you haven't been there ever, stop by on your next trip through Upton Center. Mt Tom North Trailhead Park in Easthampton, MA, is an example of D&F's focus on equity and collaboration in landscape architecture and planning. Through a facilitated public process which informed the design, this project transformed a disturbed former house lot into an expansive habitat area, while also addressing limited access to the trail network of Mt. Tom from the Easthampton side. The park includes a parking area, a 2,000 ft length, FSTAG accessible trail, planted pollinator-friendly meadow and shrubland areas, an overlook and rest areas with benches and picnic tables, educational and directional signage, and trailhead connections to adjacent trail systems.

We are happy to share that we recently completed a 2-year watershed resilience study with the Town of Williamsburg, Ma. which culminated in an Action Plan for the Mill River Watershed. We collaborated with an awesome, interdisciplinary consulting team and pro-active community members to determine landscape scale strategies, from ridge to river, to increase the Town's resilience to climate change, particularly in flood-prone Williamsburg Center.

From bridges to bylaws, from culverts to carbon sequestration, and from individual actions to municipal projects, there is much work to do, and we all have a role to play!🌎⚡️🌦🌳

Westfield River Elementary School
Site work continues at Westfield’s new elementary school. Students moved into a beautiful new building early this year, making way for the removal of the former Franklin Elementary School. Soccer and softball fields, a basketball court, a large playground, and outdoor classrooms are underway where the school building once stood.

Peter Flinker and Lee Jennings attended the groundbreaking ceremony for Amherst Community Homes, a nine-acre site on Montague Road in Amherst, developed by Valley Community Development. Fifteen duplexes providing thirty units of affordable home ownership condominiums will go on the market next summer. These highly energy-efficient homes are clustered around shared open spaces with separate parking areas to minimize vehicular traffic and promote community connection. A large portion of the existing meadow and many large trees are preserved to help the project blend into the North Amherst neighborhood.

Construction of the Congdon-DeValles Elementary School in New Bedford is underway! The ceremonial groundbreaking included students from the two current elementary schools, both buildings over 100 years old, that will be replaced with one state-of-the-art facility. We loved seeing kids in hard hats who will enjoy a new K-5 school with exciting playgrounds, outdoor classrooms, a synthetic turf field and ball courts. The new school is scheduled to open in 2027.

Excited to share that one of our landscape architecture projects, Shaw Elementary School, won the 1st place Honor Award in the 2024 WMass AIA Design Competition! This award is "bestowed for exceptional work, easily distinguishable by exceptional quality of design and function". Shaw has a great variety of nature play, active recreation, and outdoor learning spaces along with habitat areas surrounding the school building. One of the judges commented that the only downside of this project is getting the children to go back inside. 😅
