“A Photo a Day” Challenge, For the American Cancer Society in October

The Great Blue Heron

The Great Blue Heron, a solitary bird from my observations. I’ve only seen them together during mating season, but I’ve certainly not seen it all. In groups of others, I’ve seen this particular Blue chase them away to a certain distance. He doesn’t want them gone, he just doesn’t want them near him. I can relate sometimes, can’t we all?

I thought I’d give you some short antidotes about the middle story of cancer today. I think they’re funny and maybe you will too. These stories happened when I had my Stem Cell Transplant and I was being treated by medication’s that are also known to have hallucinogenic properties.

Story One: I was in the ICU, under the covers, and trying to sleep. After a while, I couldn’t stand it any longer. I slowly turned to my wife and said, “I don’t want to be rude, and he’s really very good, but can you ask him to stop playing so I can sleep?” I was referring to the lone guitar player in the corner playing ranchera music. Turning, my wife confusedly looked at the empty corner and replied, “I’ll ask him, my dear. Go to sleep.”

Story Two: My nephew had come to visit me and I was in and out of sleep, aka consciousness. At one point I woke up and said to him, “You really need to watch out for that one nurse. The one with the red mask.”

“Really?” He replied, smiling. “Why is that?”

“She’s a luchadores and comes in and throws me around the room!” I said, trying to focus on him.

The nurse had red hair and would turn me in the bed while I was unconscious so I wouldn’t get bed sores…

Story Three: As I was lying in bed, I would slowly open and close my eyes over and again. “What are you doing?” my wife inquired.

“When I close my eyes I can see the dancing bears from the Grateful Dead, and they’re dancing!!”

“A Photo a Day” For the American Cancer Society in October

The Southern Carpenter Bee
Charleston, South Carolina

Let’s get real southern here with the Southern Carpenter Bee. A clear, detailed shot of her/his eyes. Females have black faces and black hairs on their hind legs, while males have white or yellow markings on their faces. Males also have heftier bodies, greenish eyes, and heads that lack the helmet-like shape of females. With the obvious green eyes, it would be a good guess that this one is a male.

I usually have a long lens on my camera, but I had my second camera on me and took this shoot at a 105mm focal length. For non photographers, that means I leaned in pretty close to this flighty bee.

We’re going to skip a cancer story today bc I don’t want to scare off too many people. Understandably, these stories can be anxiety making for many, but let’s keep in mind that it is a fact of life for many. In 2022, there were almost 20 million new cancer cases and 9.7 million cancer-related deaths worldwide. By 2040, the number of new cancer cases is expected to increase to 29.9 million.
