Édouard Vuillard (11 November 1868 – 21 June 1940) was a French painter, decorative artist and printmaker. He was a leading member of the avant-garde group Les Nabis in the 1890s and became known for his expressive interior scenes that combined rich patterns and flattened planes of color. Vuillard also made theater sets, decorative panels and designs for stained glass and ceramics. After the Nabis disbanded, he developed a more realistic style and later painted portraits of figures from French cultural and industrial life. His early work was influenced by Japanese prints and post-impressionist artists such as Paul Gauguin.
