This bald cypress was collected four years ago in Franklinton, Louisiana, by +

Unlike the last tree I showed you, this one has already been cut and carved—you can see where it healed over time. I’ve learned a lot since then:
❌ I don’t use cut paste anymore
✅ I carve deeper now for better tapering
✅ Sometimes, you have to re-carve and refine—because bonsai is never really "done"

That’s the beauty of the process. You just keep working until you get it right. 🌱

A convincing Bald Cypress bonsai comes from structure, not foliage, because the sense of age we are chasing is created by the right details rather than by adding more green.

Those details include: ↓
✨ A powerful trunk and solid Nebari
✨ Correct Takagari so the tree reads as balanced
✨ Proper branch tapering and intentional negative space

Each of these elements helps the tree tell a clearer story of time and character. ⏳

This Bald Cypress is roughly 15 to 20 years old and has already gone through several stages of training. After resetting the tree, Evan chose to keep one original branch and used a small bamboo wedge to adjust its angle rather than removing it.

Why keep it? ↓
🌳 The branch already had age and character
🌳 Its placement worked perfectly within the design
🌳 Bald Cypresses are excellent at healing and closing wounds

That simple wedge created the space the tree needed, and with time it will callous over the area until the adjustment looks completely natural.

Bonsai on a budget? Totally doable. 🤩

✔️ Hit the clearance aisle at garden centers and you may find hidden gems for cheap.
✔️ Or take cuttings from a tree you love. They root out radially, giving you more control + a good nebari from the start.

It’s not 100% free, but it’s one of the best ways to learn without breaking the bank 💰
