Spring is coming and many of you will be buying new plants at the big box stores.

I know some claim to be lacking the proverbial green thumb, but plants from these places are healthy, and will do well if you follow a few tips.

Water
- most important thing, do it
- place stream on center stem of plant
- larger trees stream off trunk 12" up
- add for 5 seconds then stop
- let water soak down, repeat 4 times
- 5 seconds and stop, important
- do this every watering
- water every 2-3 days
- water evenings lasts longer
- let soil dry out between watering
- lot of clay water every 3-5 days

Planting- plastic pots or small perennials
- install top of rootball 1/4- 1/2" above soil
- never install rootball below existing soil
- cut roots around rootball in plastic pots
- cutting forces roots to grow out into soil
- do not need to make hole twice as large

Planting - taller shrubs, trees burlap
- install top of rootball 1/2-1" above soil
- never install rootball below existing soil
- plastic pots cut roots around rootball
- burlap unwrap, cut top off above soil
- digging from field cause soil on trunk
- check around trunk for excess soil
- pull away lower until you see large root

Adding Amendments
- ok to add a little peat, or compost
- not necessary though, do not over do it
- roots need grow out in surrounding soil
- need to adapt to existing conditions
- to much, roots not leaving planting hole

Edge
- create 3 inch deep edge single trees
- usually 18-24" out from trunk
- remove all grass inside
- create a bowl by building up soil
- round off top 3-5" high
- extends around entire edge
- bowl holds water for rootball
- bowl is created from removed soil

Mulch
- add choice of mulch 2" deep
- do not pile against trunk
- do not fill edge with mulch, leave 1"

You got this, if you have questions reach out.

Most landscapes existing today look the same, but not in a good way. They're old, overgrown, and over pruned, take a look, I think you'll see the same.

January thru March is the best time to make a change and reinvent your curb appeal. Find your home again.

Hey folks, on this snowy Tuesday lets do a quick assessment of your landscape.

This is a tough test to pass, and even though its only one question, its a ling one which exposes the overall health of your landscape.

Plant health not only refers to green or brown leaves, but more importantly considers secondary factors, like the wrong plant in the wrong spot, over planting, and over pruning, that negatively affects plant health and curb appeal over time.

Here we go and good luck.

Do you have a plant or plants with a loose, fluffy appearance, literally dancing when the wind blows, one rarely touched or pruned during the year by you or anyone, with deep vibrant color throughout each leaf, does not grow to block a window or door, is along a sidewalk or near a driveway and does not have a tight, stubby appearance, is not rubbing on your house or roof gutters, hasn't intruded into other plants around it, and when flowering, has enough flowers to run Raimondi's flower shop for a month?

Imagine what your landscape would look like if you could say the above statement about just 50% of your plants?

Hey guys the Scrooge landscape comment was not just timed for Christmas folly, but to actually try and illicit issues you may be experiencing.

I have some time, and if you got something, describe or send pics, and we will tell you how to fix it.

" Maybe Christmas (he thought) doesn’t come from a store, Maybe Christmas perhaps means a little bit more.”

Your landscape has something that frustrates you every year. You know a landscaper, ask him.

Why is your landscape a Scrooge?

Redtwig Dogwood shrubs are grown for their fire red stems come fall/winter.

Too get brilliant red winter stems, cut it back every spring to about 2-3 feet, and totally remove the old, thick gray color stems to the ground.

The young 1-2 year growth produces the best winter color so renovate it every year or ever other year.

Tip- When pruning, cut all the old, off color stems to the ground first. One cut can clear dead and crossing branching saving time.

Want to make your landscape present with a professional touch, try these two simple, yet effective tips.

Raise up the lower branching on all trees that surround your home and also clean around and expose any boulders, statues, sidewalks, lighting, stone walls, etc. that were put there for interest but may have become hidden by years of plant growth.

When raising trees the goal is 2/3 of the height with branching on and 1/3 open trunk. Achieve by identifying the first branch at the proposed height and remove. Step back and identify the next branch and remove, continuing until you are finished. You can't glue a branch back on so take your time, it gets easier as you do it.

When clearing around a boulder, light, sidewalk, etc., cut things back a little farther than normal if possible to allow yearly growth and not have the same issues.

I do not recommend raising up the lower branching on evergreen trees as most are planted to hide or distract from a view. I always recommend expanding the bed underneath instead.

It's January 2023 and if you were to drive by these mature Boxwoods you'd never guess they were just lowered 6-12 inches.

My clients backs out of the driveway on a daily basis so it was prudent to provide better site lines, so we reduced their overall profile.

Proper thinning of these Boxwoods over the years has allowed us to remove a descent portion of the framework and lower the overall size, without leaving just bare branching showing for the next two months.

A closer view shows bare branches visible all over the top but the abundance of interior growth, stimulated by years of thinning to allow light in, has created a healthy new plant inside, that offsets the look.

Overgrown landscapes are around every corner and probably right outside your front door. Removal and replacement is expensive but proper pruning will take your landscape back 15 years, you know, when we were younger, and our plants were new, small, and friendly.
