The goal for the new kitchen was to incorporate the large, sunny space into the open Great Room area, both with a shared traditional look and color scheme.

This preliminary photo (taken with my iPhone of the computer of Dustin Peck Photography) doesn’t do the kitchen justice (final photos are coming soon) but we’ll go ahead and list a few details!

* 10’ long Roman shade in a custom hand-blocked linen by Decorating With Style
* 11’ x 6’ walnut island with Danby Imperial marble
* counter stools with stain- and water-resistant fabric
* 48” Wolf range in large range alcove
* 42” Subzero refrigerator/freezer (not shown)

We blended the best of both worlds - an efficient, modern kitchen with historic house flavor - and one that should last for decades to come.

Another view of the breakfast room (photo taken with my iPhone of the computer of Dustin Peck Photography with final photos coming soon including removal of art hardware!) was a bonus space in our project between the existing Great Room and the newly enlarged kitchen. The tight space is also a major circulation area so needed careful space planning.

The space wasn’t large enough to do a fully built-in banquette so we made it work with a custom-length upholstered dining bench and sleek vintage oval pedestal table from Slate Interiors. Vintage rattan chairs from complete the look.

The Great Room of our project (photo taken with my iPhone of the Dustin Peck Photography computer), now open to the large new kitchen and breakfast room, needed a redo as well. No structural changes were made to the room other than removing the existing kitchen-y cabinet-bookcases and soffits flanking the fireplace.

We then added one library-style bookcase that holds the homeowner’s book collection in a cozy reading area.

For furnishings, we began with the client’s existing rug and added a mix of new, vintage and antique furnishings, draperies and art.

Another favorite spot in our project is the powder room (photo taken with my iPhone of the computer of Dustin Peck Photography with final photos coming soon) a small space that needed an update.

For the vanity, we wanted an antique chest with the look and vibe of the century-old house. To work, it had to have the right width, height, depth, finish and good hardware and this George III chest found at a Camden antiques shop was a perfect fit.

We added a marble top with ogee edge, faucet, wallpaper installed by Jennifer Papineau, Owner and Roman shade by Decorating With Style. We used sleek brass sconces and mirror to add just the right amount of modernity to the look.

One of our favorite things in our project is this antique Welsh cupboard (photo taken with my iPhone of the computer of Dustin Peck Photography) that we found at Slate Interiors. During kitchen space planning we made sure to leave this wall space empty for a piece of furniture to balance out the large 6x11 walnut island and this hutch does that beautifully.

We styled it simply with the client’s china and copper, finishing the top with a basket in the same coppery tones that we found at Sleepy Poet Antique Mall.

And just like that, a porch became a breakfast room. We enclosed most of the streetside screened porch for a dining space and entry to our beach house. Other changes planned for the exterior are as follows:

* Add a wide band trim around all wndows
* Add working shutters to windows
* Add louvered walls under the house
* Change color of siding
* Add landscaping

Check back for more changes to this vacation house as we remodel, furnish and “age” it for an authentic “Old Pawleys” beach house vibe.

A year and a half after our work began, the project and photoshoot is done! ✔️

This photo (taken with my iPhone of the computer of Dustin Peck Photography) shows the new kitchen, one of the changes in this century-old house. The previous kitchen, a very small, dark, closed-off space, became a large, sunny space open to the great room and new breakfast room.

The fun part was retaining the character of the original home with the design from start to finish.

It’s photoshoot week again and we’re packing up items for our project. Many designers hire a stylist but we love this part, starting with the hunt for special items for each space of each project, chosen to tell the story of the home and the homeowner.

These items will style the project bar that has smoky blue cabinets and creamy marble counters. We searched for dark oak accessories with a certain look that worked with this historic home’s new interior. The details:

* Flat round tray from Hamilton Stuart
* Pair of antique prayer bowls from The Brass Grasshopper (for olives and crackers)
* English Biscuit Barrel from Sleepy Poet Antique Mall
* Chinese Terracotta Warrior statue from Mike D Antiques

The demo begins! Most of this screened porch will become the new dining room which is open to the kitchen and does double duty as the new entry for the home.

We’ll use a long, slim table with leaves for expansion when needed while leaving plenty of room for a proper entry with drop zone potential.

We’ll also have a second dining space in the kitchen.
