A nice quiet day at the studio assembling and editing bookshelf ingredients for our project bookcases. The project great room has tall, built-in bookcases, painted white, that flank the fireplace and are deep and non-adjustable, making them a bit harder to do!
All of the items pictured here were sourced locally. Even though 99% of what we sell is new and custom made for our clients, those last touches are often impossible to find new. Once we determine the look we want, we scour local antique shops for just the right thing.
Here are a few details we kept in mind while searching for the right items for these bookcases:
* Color & Continuity - because the room’s furnishings are in warm natural wood tones, we’ll use the same for items on the shelves. We’ll also add color in small amounts to tie in the room’s fabrics.
* Contrast - because the bookcases and fireplace are painted white, we’re using medium to dark items, including antique wood boxes, bowls and sculptural driftwood and colorful items and books, to add a nice contrast.
* Dimension - because the bookcase is deep, we’ll need to layer items on the shelves using art, book stacks and three dimensional sculptural elements.
* Content - because the interior was designed in a Charleston-inspired look, the bookshelves will display items that relate a similar traditional, Lowcountry mood.
The only thing left is to now find a few new things: a couple of large bowls and coffee table book stacks in the right color and subject matter for this family of readers!
