As May comes to an end you can add all the Pool guys to your prayer list!
May is Mental Health Awareness Month.
The swimming pool business is seasonal and May is a deadline for the start of the season. We go from 0 to 100 in an instant.
From no lines at the warehouse to hours of waiting for our orders. From trying to get as much work done in winter daylight hours to not having enough time in 24 hrs.
From doing an ad, answering text, calls, emails, messenger, post responses, setting appointments, looking at jobs, all depending on weather conditions.
Then you find, price out supplies, do quotes, find the right people for the parts out of your scope of work, meet again, do contract. Help customer with HOA approvals when needed. That takes time to be approved.
Then you do permit. More time. Then you mark yard for utilities, get moved if needed. More time.
Then you can start a job. Then you get materials to job, manage workers, take down fences, turn yard into a war zone during construction and it is the brunt of the job.
Placement, level of deck, type of coping, where system goes and much much more are key factors.
Then you line up cranes, boom trucks, concrete, pumps, and inspections.
You get pool set, or formed and rebar for Shotcrete. You have to wait for shell to cure on shotcrete. On fiberglass you can start plumbing and pool is filled and backfilled.
Then concrete pools you can do tile, coping, plumbing after it is cured. You can do equipment pad. Have Electrical panels installed and start equipment installation.
Deck preparation is done right after backfill with fiberglass. After curing and plumbing/conduit on concrete pools.
Retaining walls are started and you can actually see the progress at this point.
More inspections, materials, workers for each process to manage.
You are working in aesthetics on spas and extended pool walls as well.
Change orders are required when you make a change in work or materials. This can stop a job if materials have to be ordered or it takes a special sub contractor for the change. If the deck area is made bigger it creates basically a new job to prepare more area to put concrete or pavers. Change orders usually create time line changes and pushes the job out with ordering materials and rescheduling workers.
After walls are done, deck prep is done, drainage in place you can do the pavers or concrete deck. More inspections
Then when deck is done, clean up begins and touch up on things as needed.
Pool system is installed ready to start up. On fiberglass already running.
Then you do the plaster/mini pebble interior of pool.
They shoot the plaster on. Smooth it out best they can and it sits over night to cure. It doesn’t look anything like you ordered at this point and can be a bright looking color if blue.
The next day they clean it, and you see all the plaster and as it starts filling up you see the color coming to life and when the pool is full you are amazed at the process. If it is Super Blue it is white and gets bluer and bluer the deeper the water. Blue plaster and other colors get more color and darker as it gets deeper.
The Pool Guy goes over the process to brush it 30 days and either refers you to someone to do a pool school or has a company set it up.
Then you go over some items, get your final check and get your special guy to come in and do the small things that are articulate.
This is just one job the pool guy is handling. Every job is at a different process and every customer is different and you are working to make each person the product they are looking for!
During all this you meet some of the nicest people in the world. But also during this you can meet someone that is not grateful for your hard work and not respectful of your workers or your time.
If you want to build a pool, plan it out, see the progress and ensure the best outcome good communication is necessary. If you have questions ask. If a problem arises call the pool guy.
Out of thousands of jobs the ones who communicate and ask what is the best option and are grateful have a normal construction experience that gives everyone gratification and pleasure as they work on the pool.
Others being demanding and never saying thankyou or changing things after the contract is done create a terrible atmosphere and every change moves the time line and they are not grateful for anything. It sucks the life out of everyone on the job.
Every Pool Guy has some of these. It is in the statistics the bigger you get.
It is you Guys, the new Friends and Customers that we meet that are wonderful that give us the strength to get through and seeing you enjoy your pool is the best gift we receive!
Thank you to you All and God Bless you! So remember to pray for your pool guy, they is just a tad busy in this time of the season! Happy Summer!
Pool guy can be a he, she or whatever they choose to be. I am a Pool Guy. My wife is the Boss, but a Pool Gal! God Bless!
