Your pipes are at risk of freezing any time temperatures drop below 32°F. However, it's more likely pipes will freeze when temperatures dip below 20°F. The longer the weather remains below freezing, the more likely it is your pipes can freeze if not properly protected and winterized.
To protect your pipes from freezing:
1. Let your faucets drip. Turn on both your hot and cold water faucets to create a slow drip. This constant flow can help prevent water from sitting in the pipes and freezing.
2. Cover exposed pipes. Ideally you want to cover exposed pipes with pipe insulation. For a short term fix you can wrap them with rags, newspapers, trash bags, plastic foam or even bubble wrap.
3. Don't touch your thermostat. Keep the temperature above 65 degrees both day and night. Even if you are away from your home.
4. Open cabinet doors. Keep warm air circulating around the pipes by opening the all cabinet doors in bathrooms and kitchen.
5. Keep garage doors closed. Keep in mind you may have exposed pipes or a water heater in the garage that may need to be insulated as well.
