I’m hearing horror stories about tree prices this year. To find a pre cut nice size Fraser Fir under $100 is just about impossible. The reason, or at least the part I believe, is that diesel fuel prices for the heavy equipment used to mass harvest trees and the utilities expense of refrigerated warehouse where they are stored until shipping, and the deisel that refrigerated 18 wheelers that deliver them use all have skyrocketed this year. Pre cut trees are very labor intensive at every step of the harvest and labor costs have also jumped. Four years ago, which is the last time I had pre cut trees, an 8’ #1 Fraser Fir, delivered to a central area where I have to drive 25 miles to pick up cost ME $53. I have to drive a trailer to pick them up, load them all by hand, bring them back, unload, trim, and unbind them, figure the best way to display them, and what do I charge for that tree? I think most places double their cost, but with all the time and labor, they need to triple it to actually make a profit. And that’s in this area. In the big cities, where crazy people pay crazy prices for everything - the attaches photo was sent to me yesterday from the Washington DC area. A 12’ Fraser Fir. Admittedly the best tree around, but zoom on that price!!!! Anyway, that why I like growing them myself. Almost no environmental footprint, a lot fewer expenses to pass along, and they are just so pretty growing out there. Our field grown trees are $70 this year - Choose and Cut tree farms in Delaware are your best value by far for a tree that will hold its needles far far longer than a pre cut tree. First price bump in several years and it just reflects the fuel cost to mow and spray and fertilize, etc. It was so nice seeing all the old friends drop in yesterday. Keith is there holding the fort today and I’ll be there around noon. Hope to see ya!
